Powers
Layla is a powerful precognitive with no foreseeable limit to how far ahead she could see. This is not a controlled power, though it's consistent and constant. She also has an instinctive understanding of reality and the events occurring in it. She can detect any alteration to reality, as well as have knowledge of a variety of details about anyone she meets, among other things.
History
Shortly before her birth, Layla's father was killed, leaving her mother to raise her alone. Kate Locke came from a long line of police officers based in Los Angeles, an aspect of her mother's life that became vital to Layla's from an early age. Though she spent little time in her mother's precinct, she was constantly surrounded by officers of various ranks.
By the time she reached middle school, she already had an instinct that was remarkable, never failing her when she needed it. Deja vu was constant in her life, something she didn't recognize for what it was until she was in high school.
The summer after she graduated, she started her training at the nearest police academy. Before she completed her time there, her mother was shot and killed-a death she foresaw and failed to prevent. She finished her training, but by then LA was an unfriendly place to Layla, filled with painful memories.
After less than a year at her mother's precinct, she transferred across the country to New York City, where she worked for several years in the NYPD until her powers failed her, and left her with a lifelong knee injury. That same incident, however, introduced her to Van Knight, and stood as the starting point for their partnership and X-Factor Investigations.
With Van under Janus' control for some time, Layla was seriously injured and included in the 90% of mutants to lose their abilities, Van used some of Janus' remaining reality manipulating powers to return her powers and health, as well return her father's life, complete with  updated memories of  her life.
Following the death of Van's girlfriend, Eve Corgan, Layla rekindled a barely begun romance with her partner. Throughout this time, he was unaware of her knowledge that Eve wasn't dead, but being held by a group dedicated to creating the ultimate mutant. With Eve's impending return, Layla came clean and days later  found herself alone with the papers to X-Factor.
