.The Seventh Robe
(Robe Masters of Noogiya - Book 1)
Harper Collins 1993

THE STORY OF THE BOOK
After encouragement from HarperCollins I sent them a proposal for this book, which they took up enthusiastically.  I got writing.  Deadlines are great for motivation, but not so good for finesse.  This story, and its sequel, could have done with more fine-tuning.
Still, I embarked on creating an elaborate new  world, far in the future, created and governed by women.  (Not something new in SF, but this is my take on it.)  I knew how they got there, and what motivated this new society.  All this sprang from a single dream!
(pages 29 to 35 in the book)
But even with Harper Collins enthusiasm all was not easy.  My word-count estimate was wildly out (my old computer didn't have a word count) and a few days after the birth of my first live son I was asked to cut thirty pages.
And I did!  The story changed a lot, of course.  One major scene vanished, and a lot of detailing got lost in the countless trimmings.  But the book improved over all.  And I learnt another valuable lesson as a writer.  - How to edit severely!
