| MacLean Contributions from Gordon McConnell, New Zeland 1. I am researching my family tree. Lachie MacLeanof Drumifhraoich is my cousin ... There are quite a few Tirisdeach descendants in New Zealand which I am busily trying to trace ... 2. My ancestors go back centuries ... this includes MacLeans, MacDonalds and 1 Campbell. Anything 'Tiree' interests me - so I would be grateful if you bear that in mind. 3. I have a cousin who is connected to me three times, twice through my grandfather Hector MacLean and once through my grandmother Christian MacLean. Effie and Lachine MacDonald of Balemeanach are sousins of mine ... I am currently trying to trace Tiree descendants connected to the estate of Sir Donald MacLean of Napier. That line has expired through the male line but I believe that the female line through Sir Donald's daughter is still extant. 4. I have recently been appointed been appointed genealogist of the clain Maclean Association of NZ. 5. This is a gravestone of Hector Neoil Macleanfound in a cemetery at Woodville, New Zealand. He emigrated to NZ towards the end of the last century from Balemeanach. Contributions from Mrs Patricia MacLean, Fresno, California 1. Rootsweb.com is an organization of newsletters of the whole USA and many countries of the world. It is a vehicle for genealogical research ... the list for Tiree is as follows: [email protected]. If you are interested in the various lists available see: http://lists.rootsweb.com ... The family I am researching came from Cornaigbeg. My husband is descended from one son who emigrated to Canada in 1851-53 with his family. I have no idea what happened to the rest of them other than one brother, Alexander, who also emigrated to Canada ... Hugh McLean married Janet McLean (her maiden name McLean also) 6th Feb 1911 at Cornaigbeg. In 1815 Hugh MacLean was listed as a Sergeant of the 3rd battallion Argyll local militia. (I don't know what this is - are there any such records on Tiree about local militia? They had the following children all born at Cornaigbeg: Hector b 2 Nov 1811 Lachlan b 4 Jun 1815 (my husband's ancestor) Alexander b 1 Aug 1817 John b 29 Aug 1818 Mary b 15 Sept 1819 Catherine b 25 Aug 1821 Hector (2) b 5 April 1823 Christina b 8 Mar 1825 Hugh b 19 Mar 1826 Donald b 27 July 1828 John (2) b 11 Apr 1830 I have only seen the 1851 census. At that time there no Janet so assume she had already died. Lachlan and new wife Isabella Stewart of Salum, and brother Alex and Donald were living at Cornaigbeg with father Hugh. Lachlan and wife and Alex had emigrated some time after that census and before 1853 because Lachlan's first child was born in Fergus, Ontario in 1853. I assume that Lachlan and Alex probably emigrated after the Father Hugh died. Some one told me that there is not a cemtery in the general area of Cornaigbeg, so I wonder where Hugh might have been buried, and also Janet. Were tombstone and graveyards not available to crofters? 2. I recently made contact with an Anne MacLean of British Columbia, Canada, whose husband is a descendant of the Maclcolm MacLean who was Governor of British Columbia. This island ancestor was Allan MacLean of Corniagbeg who married Jane MacFadyen in 1822 and emigrated to Canada in 1845. Contributions from Allana McLean, Canada 1. Donald [MacLean, the butcher in Scarinish] is my cousin but met Jessie and Colin MacKinnon, Nancy and family and also Flora and Lachlan MacLean. Flora is my 2nd cousin. My grandmother, Margaret (Peggy) MacDonald was born on Tyree. Her parents - my great grandparents - were Allan MacDonald and Ann MacLean. Allan was a schoolmaster. My father was named after him and I was named after my father. Contributions from Tami Bishop, Wyoming, USA 1. My great-grandparents on my father's side (MacLean and Kennedy) were born [on Tiree]. Contributions from Jura MacLean Sherwood, MedFord, Oregon, USA 1. I've never been to Tiree having only recently discovered my ancestors came from Tiree. Allan McLean b. 1764 and Flora McArthur b. 1783 moved over the water to the island of Jura where they both died and are buried. I'm very interested in finding others who might be descended from this couple and hope I can make some contacts through your newsletter. |
| Contributions from Anne MacLean 1. I just wanted to provide a little more detail and to correct some items that were referred to, since my knowledge has been updated a bit recently. I would really appreciate it if you could put this on the website, under Maclean genealogical database: Allan Maclean b. 1802 married Jane MacFadyen (MacPhaiden) b. 1804, date of marriage March 8, 1820. They had a nine-acre croft at Cornaigbeg, with pasture rights to three acres. Ten children were born to them on Tiree: Sarah, Alexander (b. Jan.1, 1824), Archibald, Flora (b. Mar.30, 1826), Hugh, Hector, Malcolm (b. Aug.14, 1842), John, Katie and Lachlan. The entire family emigrated to Canada in 1850. They homesteaded in Mariposa Township, Victoria County, Ontario. Some of the sons subsequently settled in the west, notably Malcolm who became the first mayor of Vancouver in 1886, and Archibald, my husband's great-grandfather, who settled in Winnipeg in the 1880s. We think that some other close Tiree relatives may have come to Nova Scotia. Seeking any information on family connections and ships leaving from Tobermory, Glasgow or ? for Canada in 1850. |
