| Contributions from Arthur Stewart, Hampshire. Three of 'our' McLans shipped out to NZ in 1868 or there abouts, and worked for Sir Donald and later his son Sir Douglas. One of them, Archibald, eventually bought 3,000 acres of Sir Douglas's vast estate and farmed it as 'Greenhill', he died in 1926 and the farm is now run by a descendant of his step children. Archibalds brother Donald [O.B.E.] also farmed for himself at 'Glencoe', in the same area as Archie. We visited Greenhill two years ago and were fortunate to see Archie's home still occupied albeit not by McLean. We also saw Archies family bible which contained a few interesting genealogy snippets. Follows an extract: Transcript of Archibald McLeans� handwritten notes in Bible at Greenhill Farm, Maraekakaho, New Zealand. �Granfather Greenhill (Archibald McLean) his great Granfather originally came from Coll, from there to Tiree Kirkpool taking a farm there. Granfather Greenhill takes the Greenhill farm soon after getting married died at the age of 76. Gran Mother (Flora McLean) born in Ardcrinish (sp?) Mull came to Hynish Tiree with the owner of Hynish (Hector McLean) father of George McLean (Known to me) they being 1st Cousins, died at Greenhill at the ripe age of 102 years. Granfather Crosh (Charles McLean) when married had a farm at Hough, afterwards taking the Crosh farm where I was born where he died over 91 years. Gran Mother Ann Campbell a native of Tiree her father living at Barapool died age 97 Lord Cumpton Fortosque (sp?) being a connection of Gran Mother Greenhill� I have scanned copies of pictures of Greenhill NZ and Archies Obit. from 1926, together with a rather poor copy of a copy etc. of a very grand headstone which appears to have been taken in the masons yard in Glasgow and which was destined for the grave of Archies father, Lachlan McLean of Greenhill Tyree. He farmed there until his death in 1885. |
