SINGLE HANDED - A photographic exhibition of General Practitioners in remote and rural areas by Rosie Donovan (posted 28th March 2001)
Tonight at the Surgery at Baugh renowned photographerRosie Donovan gave an extremely well-received talk to introduce her exhibition 'Single Handed'. This is aphotographic study of single-handed general practioners - doctors who essentially work alone and without the backup of a large practice - in the remote areas of Scotland. It consists of photographs of the doctors, all with the beautiful landscapes of Scotland behind them. Theportraits are accompanied by personal accounts which demonstrate theimportance of this type of medical practiceto Scotland and the contribution these dedicated physicians make to communities in the Highlands and Islands and other remote rural areas of Scotland. Striking black and white photographs portray a unique group of individuals at home in the stunning beauty of the Highlandscenery. At a time when questions are being asked about the future of single-handed practitioners, this exhibition is a timely reminder of their role in the National Health Service.Rosie Donovan is a Glasgow-born photographer who has lived in London, Ontario, since 1972. She studied photography at Beal Art School and the University of Western Ontario. Shooting to fame as a result of her first book Ex Patria, a study of Scots living in Canada, she is a passionate observer of people, with the ability to capture the essence of her subjects, meticulously posing them to reflect their personalities, lifestyles and interests. She works exclusively in black and white, using available light. Rosie kindly agreed to pose for the picture above, next to her photograph of Doctor Holliday, which can also been seen below in 'Putting a Face to a name'.
