Drafted in 1917 and served in WWI. Discharged in 1919.
Drafted again in Sept. 1939 (Wehr Kreis VI)
Served in France with the 328th Inf. Regt., 227nd Inf. Div., Discharged in July 1940 went back to work at Rheinmetall Borsig in Duisburg. Recalled to active duty in May 1943 and assigned to 5.Kompanie Pz. Gren. Rgt. G.D..
Fought at Kursk and lightly wounded there. Fought in the many battles of Aug. - Nov. 1943. Distinguished himself at the battle of Targul Fumus in May 1944 for his steadfastness in battle.
Wounded in Aug. 1944 in East Prussia and Discharged a second time in Oct. 1944. Went back to work at Rneinmetall until March 1945 drafted into the Volksturm. Issued a shotgun w/ 8 rounds and 2 Panzerfaust. Assigned a section of 10 old men and young boys and told to hold a position against an English column. At the same time severely reprimanded for defeatism!
In the following hours proceeds to knock out 2 tanks with panzerfausts, then tells all his men to go home, throws away his shotgun and walks home, and waits for the end of the war. Finally discharged from the Army in July 1945.
- Awards- WWI Combatants Cross. Panzer assault badge in Bronz(July 1943), Wound badge in Black(Aug. 1943), Iron Cross IInd Class(June 1944) Wound badge in Silver(Sept. 1944), War merit cross 2nd Class(Oct. 1944).
