- Pers�nlich: Parents were farmers and Gerhards father tought him how to operate and maintain all the farm equipment. Gerhard left home at 16 to apprentice as a mechanic in Potsdam. Married Eva Britt Burkholtz in 1941. Two children, a son and a daughter.
Joined the German Army in 1939 and transfered to the newly formed Infantry Regiment Gro�deutschland, in 1940. Served in France 1940 and the Balkins in 1941.
Served in the Infanterie-Division Gro�deutschland (mot) in 1942. Later served with the Panzergrenadier-Division Gro�deutschland, until being taken prisoner by the Russians in Pregarten, Austria May 1945.
Released from prison camp late 1948 and reunited with family in the United States, 1949.
