Funeral services were held at Home at Forman and buried in the Asbury Cemetery, June 07, 1940 at 1:30 p.m.

Mineral Daily News-Tribune June 03, 1940

ONE KILLED AND THREE OTHERS SERIOUSLY INJURED LAST NIGHT IN COUNTYS WORST WRECK.

Doyle Marshall Instantly Killed, Leon Murray and Elwood Rice in Critical Condition at Hospital After Car Crashed Into Coal Truck; McCues condition fair.

The condition of both Leon Murray and Elwood Rice was reported unchanged at the Potomac Valley Hospital at 2 oclock this afternoon.

One Keyser youth and three others seriously injured last night in one of the worst automobile accidents in the history of Mineral County, when the car in which they were riding crashed into the rear of a load coal tuck about 11 oclock on U.S. 50 near the Van Myra Camp Grounds.

The dead youth is Doyle W. Marshall, 23, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Marshall, Forman, Grant County. Who has been living with his uncle, Harry Marshall on New creek drive for the last two years.  Marshall, who was driver of the car, was killed almost instantly.  He had a fractured skull and broken neck.

The injured are: Leon Murray, 19 son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Murray, 28 Sharpless Street; extensive skull fracture, lacerations of the forehead and scalp. Paralysis of the right side. He is still unconscious and his condition is considered extremely critical.

Elwood (Pete) Rice, 19 son of Mr. and Mrs. James Smith, 139 South Main Street: fracture of the skull and lower jaw, dislocated right hip.  He remains unconscious and his condition is considered extremely critical.

Hartsel F. McCue, 18, son of Mrs. Eva F. McCue, First Street; lacerations of the scalp, concussion of the brain, contusion of the right wrist. His condition is fair and he is given a good chance to recover.

Although Trooper R. R. Karickhoff conducted an intensive investigation all last night and up until 11 oclock this morning, details concerning the cause of the accident are sill not all available. It is not know whether or not he truck was moving or who was driving it.  Karickhoff told a News Tribune reporter this morning that he so far uncovered the following facts:

McCue, Murray and Rice had been in Burlington and caught a ride back to Keyser with Marshall.  Just west of the entrance to the Van Myra Camp Grounds the car, a 1935 Chevrolet coach owned by Marshall ran into the rear end of the truck headed in the same direction.  McCue the only one of the occupants able to talk today said that he didnt see the truck until they hit it.  He and Murray were in the back seat while Rice was riding in the front seat with Marshall.

Mrs. D. A. Stalnaker of Keyser told Trooper Kariekhoff she was driving toward Burlington when the accident occurred just ahead of her.  She said she thought the truck was moving slowly while the car was traveling at a high rate of speed.  The truck is registered in the name of E. H. Parker, 121 West First Street, Cumberland.

The impact of the collision must have been terrible, Kirickhoff said.  The front of the car was completely demolished and part of the hood went back into the front seat.  The truck was loaded with coal and this added weight is believed to have increased the impact.
