| Schools of Grant County, Wv :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Mt Vernon-Located on Rt 42 about one mile southeast of Mt Storm. It was built after the original Mt Stoorm one-room was moved to Mt Storm at the junction of what is now Rt 50 and 42. This school had been located adjacent to the early Methodist & Presbyterian Churches and then moved further south to its permanent site. Oak Dale (Paddy's Land)- The first school was built on the present site of the Oak Dale Church. This building was burned and another one was constructed on the same site. This building was also burned and another school was built about 1/4 mile south of this site. Oak Hill-Earlier known as the Reel School. Was located on the Maysville/Falls Road near the Old Morgantown Road about 1 1/2 mile from Maysville. Thought to be built in the 1800's and continued until 1950 at which time the pupils transferred to Maysville. Open Ridge- Located about 1 1/2 mile southwest of the Forest Service Road leading up to the Dolly Sods Area. First school constructed in 1928 and in 1931 a new building was constructed and closed in 1941. Orr's Mountain- To get to this school from the Patterson Creek Road, one had to go up the Egypt Road and proceed on the Orr's Mt Road to the top of the mountain. The first school was built in 1890 and closed in 1939 and pupils were transferred to Petersburg. Parks- Located on the western side of Rt 42 3 mile north of Petersburg. Petersburg Elemetary- It is reasonable to assume the first school dates back to the post Revolutionary War period. Petersburg High- Training beyond 8th grade was nonexistent in Grant County until 1915. School opened in the fall of 1917 with the 11th grade added with the opening of St John's Academy in the fall of 1921 it became possible for students to complete the senior year there. The senior year was added to the school curriculum in 1922. The high school continued in the same building as the elemetary school until moving to the St John's Academy property after its closing in 1933. In 1967 a new building was constructed. Pilgrim's Rest-this school was located on Rt 93 on the New Creek Road. Thought to have been built and occupied sometime during 1890's. Pine Grove- Located 1/2 mile west of Bismarck off Rt 93. The pupils were transferred to the Little Creek Store in the early 1930's. Pine Ridge- Located on the Corners Road about 1 mile south of where this road intersects with the Kline's Gap Road . Opened in 1921 and closed in 1933 with pupils transferring to Petersburg. Popular- Located on the Tucker Ridge Road. It was a private school built by early settlers who paid for their children to attend this school. The next building used for the school burned about 1915 and they used temporary facilities until the erection of the present structure which was in 1917-18. This building was located on the ridge about 3 miles northeast of the Knobley Church. Quantico- Located in the Ridges about 1/2 mile southwest of the Mt Hebron Church and near the Hogueland Lane. This school burned in 1908 and a new building was constructed on the west side of the Ridge Road. The school operated at this location until it was closed in 1932 and pupils was transferred to Petersburg. Richwoods- This school started in 1908. Locted on the north side of North Mt. and south of the Potomac River and about 3 miles west of Cabins. The first building was log and with a dirt floor. Rohrbaugh- Located on the east side of the Allegheny Mt about 1 1/4 mile north of the Dolly Sods Road. The building was constructed about 1900 and continued until 1942 when it was sestroyed by arson. Rough Run- Located about 1/2 mile northeast of the now discontinued Rough Run Post Office on the lot now occupied by the Church of the Brethren. About 1880 this school site was abandoned and a building constructed about 1/4 mile south of Rough Run at the intersection of the South Mill Creek Road and the road leading to Deep Spring. The first building erected at this site until it burned about 1920. A new building was then constructed and used until the school discontinued in 1950 and the pupils transported to the consolidated school at Dorcas. Royal Glen- Located on the Royal Glen Road along the Potomac River about 1 mile from Rt 4 & 28. The school location was first at Royal Glen Mill about 1895. Another building was constructed and after a few years it burned. A new school was built and continued until 1918 and pupils were transferred to Harmony Hall School. Scherr- The first schoolhouse was built 1850. Located 200 feet south of the Idleman Cemetery. It was also used by the Dunkard Brethren for church services. Immediately after the Civil War (1865) a small log house was built and used as school purposes for a few years. In 1868 a brick school was constructed on the site of the present building. The present 2 room schoolhouse was built about 1913 and used until 1950 when pupils transferred to Maysville. Scott- Located 1 1/2 mile west of Rt 42 on the Ridge Road at the forks of the road leading to Mt Hebron Church and the other going to Kline's Gap. This school opened about 1850 in a log building which burned some years later. It was replaced with a brick structure which was used until the school closed in 1941. Sherwood- this school was located on the eastern side of the Allegheny Front, some distance north of Buzzard's Glory and west of Laurel Dale. Shook- This school was located on the west side of Cave Mt. about halfway between the river and the top of the mountain and in a ravine known as Shook Hollow. The school may have been opened prior to 1870 and closed in 1941. Sinks- Located 2 mile south of Rough Run on the Deep Spring Road. It opened Mar 1, 1934 . Spring Run- Constructed in the summer of 1914 at the junction of the Elkhorn And Spring Run Roads near the Masonville PostOffice. This school operated as a 2 room school until 1930 and closed in 1950 when it consolidated with Dorcas. Streby- Located on the Jordan Run Road about 3 1/2 mile south of Rt 42 at the junction of Big Star and Little Star Runs. The land was purchased 1883 and a school building was constructed soon after the deed was executed. At this time the nearby Burgess School was discontinued and pupils from that school transferred to the new site. This school building was used for many years as a community church. In 1950 the school was closed and the pupils were transferred to the consolidated school in Maysville. Striped- This school was situated 3 miles west of Mt Storm. It was built in 1860's and operated till 1939. Pupils were transferred with Mt Storm Grade School. Terra Firma( Jordan Run)- Located about 1/2 mile north of the US Forest Service Road servicing the Dolly Sods Area. Terra Firma (Mountain)- Located near Pisgah church about 3 miles south of Rt 50. The Pisgah School site was near the Jake Hawk home about 1 mile from Abrahms Creek. Thought to opened around 1890. Thorn Run- The first school in this area was held in a log building on top of Martin Lane Hill near the Old Toll House . Thorn Run opened at Martin on the banks of Thorn Run. About 1895 this school was moved from the above site to a location one mile east. Closed in 1940. |
