| GRANT COUNTY , WV SCHOOLS Town Hill- The first school for blacks in the Petersburg area was opened about 1900 in a log building known as the Barger House. It was located on Rt 42 at the intersection of the Godlove Road. This building was used until it burned about 1912. A new one was then constucted on the hill in Petersburg. This building was destroyed by fire about 1916 and school was held in the church for several years utnil another building was constructed along the highway. This building was used until the 2 room school was built on the present site in 1948. A separate school for blacks was discontinued in 1963 and pupils entered Petersburg Elemetary. Turkey Knob- this school for blacks was located on a back road 1/4 mile east of the Dorcas Road and two miles southeast of Petersburg in the community known as Turkey Knob. School first opened there in a log building about 1890 and continued until 1933 when pupils were transported to Town Hill. Twin Mountain- This school was operated on the site of the Twin Mt orchard and for sometime school was held in a roughly repaired sheep shed. In 1942 a schoolhouse was constructed. Sometime in the fifties Twin Mt School closed never to open again. Union School Complex- Located 2 mile west of Mt Storm along Rt 50. Construction began in 1966 and was completed during the summer of 1967. Consolidation of Bayard and Mt Storm began in 1974. Vocational Education and South Branch Vocational Center- Opened the fall of 1970. Located between Petersburg High and Petersburg Elemetary. White Hall- Located on Rt 50 about 2 miles northeast of Mt Storm. The school was believed to have been opened around 1865. School was closed around 1928 and pupils were transported to Mt Storm. The building was used as a church for a number of years. Williamsport (Black)- Located between Medley and Williamsport on the Patterson Creek Road. It opened about 1885 and closed in the 1940's. In 1978 the Grant County Board of Education gave this building to St Paul United Methodist Church of Williamsport. It was moved to the site of the church. Williamsport (White)- Located 1/2 mile east of Williamsport on the south side of the road leading across the mountain to Old Fields. The second Williamsport school building was located about 1/4 mile north of the village on the road leading to Burlington. This school opererated until 1935 at which time it closed and pupils were transported to the Forman School. Wilsonia- Located 2 miles east of Henry along the Western Maryland Railroad. Wise- Located nine miles south of Petersburg on North Mill Creek about 200 feet from Wise Run and on the east side of Rt 220 known as Franklin Pike. Three school buildings have been constructed on or near this site. The first was small made of logs and equipped with primitive furniture. It was built before the Civil War. The second, also a log building, was located on the opposite side of Wise Run. The third, was built in 1887 of frame construction and located about 200 feet from the run. The school discontinued in 1962. Yokum- Located 4 miles south of Petersburg near Rt 220 on the east bank of North Mill Creek. Constructed in 1869 and continued until 1944 and pupils were transported to Petersburg. Additional school locations not reported : 1) Adjacent to the Spring Run Trout Hatchery 2) Near Kermit Berg home on Jordan Run Names of these schools were unknown. *** Excerpts of these schools were taken from the Grant County School book . |
