Grant County Schools           

Dobbin- located in a lumber town about 3 miles from Bayard. The school was closed in 1919 and pupils were transferred to Henry.
Dorcas- This school was probably established before the Civil War. The first school was located on the hill across from the present day Dorcas Baptist Church. It was used until 1950 when a new more modern 4 room building was constructed.
Edgewood- located about 1 mile north of the Grant/Pendleton County Line on the east side of Rt 220. This school operated for 40 yrs 1913-1953. In 1953 the pupils were transferred to Wise School. The building was sold and removed to Hyres Rock on the North Fork of the Potomac where it is being used as a dwelling.
Elkhorn- located about 2 miles east of Dorcas along the Elkhorn Road and on the site of the present day Sites Chapel. The 1st building was built during the summer of 1869 and used until 1903. Then another one was built and used until the school closed and pupils were transferred to Spring Run in 1914.
Eureka- Located on the Keplinger Farm near the intersection of the Jordan Run Road and the road leading to the Stoney River Dam. It closed in 1950. It was built in the 1880's or possible earlier.
Excelsior- Located 3 miles south of Scherr along Rt 42. This was not the 1st structure to provide schooling. Approximately 1/4 mile further south on the same side of the highway was the site of an earlier school.
Fairview- located on the east side of Rt 220 about 3 miles south of Petersburg. It opened in 1927 and closed in 1934.
Forest Hill- Located between Scherr and Maysville east of Rt 42. It was built in 1903 or 1904.
Forman- Located on the Pattersons Creek Road on the northern bank of the Thorn Run. Constructed before 1903 and closed in 1958.
Frye -Located 1 mile east of Lahmansville. It served the community from 1850-1944.
Getz- Located at Dorcas about 1 1/2 mile southwest of Spring Run Fish Hatchery near the road leading to Dumpling Run. School opened in 1880 and closed 1914 and the pupils transferred to Spring Run School.
Gormania- It is believed that the school was first composed of two ground level classrooms and that a third room was added about 1905. Sometime between 1914 and 1920 a new four room building was built at the eastern edge of the town on the south side of Rt 50. The pupils were then transferred to Bayard Elem. School.
Grassy Ridge- This school was located on Grassy Ridge Road 3 miles from the Allegheny Church. It opened about 1900. In 1943 the pupils transferred to Mt Storm due to consolidation.
Harmony Hill- Located near Johnson Run Road. It was used until destroyed by fire in 1923. A new building was constructed and was used until 1930 and pupils transferred to Johnson Run.
Hendrickson- Located near the Bayard Cemetery was built about 1850.
Henry- Built in 1904, a four room, 2 story building with two rooms on each floor. It was closed in 1935 and pupils were transferred to Bayard.
Hopeville-Located 1/2 mile above Smoke Hole Caverns on the western side of Rt 28 near the Jordan Run intersection. The first building was used until 1932 and pupils were transported to Petersburg.
Johnson Run- Located on the south side of Petersburg at the intersection of the South Mill Creek Road and Rt 220. It opened about 1870 and continued as a one room school unti l1916 at which time another building was constructed nearby but was not connected to the first one. Then in 1928 a new 4 room building was built and in 1956 the pupils were transferred to Petersburg Elem.
Johnsonville- Located east of Rt 42 on the Terra Coat Road. Opened in 1860 and closed in the 1940's.
Jordan Run- The schoolhouse was built in the late 1800's in a field near the McGinnis Store and about 4 miles south of Streby. It closed in 1950 and pupils were transferred to Maysville Elem.
Judy- Located on South Mill Creek about 2 miles north of the Pendleton County line and two miles southwest of Rough Run. It opened about 1890 and closed 1933 and pupils were transferred to RoughRun. It opened about 1890 and closed 1933 and pupils were transferred to Rough Run.
Ketterman- Located on the east side of the Smoke Hole River about 1/2 mile below Big Bend Campground. It opened in the 1920's and closed in 1951.
Kimble- Located about 7 miles east of Rt 4 on the Smoke Hole Road. Constructed in 1945. Operated for ten years. Closed in 1955 and pupils were transported to Petersburg.
Kline's Gap- Located 4 mile southwest of Maysville on the Ridge Road and the west side of Kline's Gap Creek. Built about 1875 and closed in 1950. Some of the pupils were transported to Maysville and the others to Petersburg.
Knobley- This school was built prior to 1876 and closed in 1942 and pupils were transferred to Maysville.
Lahmansville- Opened around 1850 and closed 1949.
Landes- Located on the Smoke Hole Road 2 miles south of Rt 4. Opened in early 1920's and closed in 1933 and pupils were transferred to Deep Run.
Layhigh- Located across the North Fork of the Potomac River from the community of Corner.
Little Creek- Located on Rt 93 about a 1/2 mile from Bismarck. School closed in 1940 and consolidated with Mt Storm Elem.
Lone Star- Located 2 mile south of Bayard on the "Al Brown Road" in a meadow. It closed in early 1920's and pupils transferred to Bayard.
Long Hollow- Located in a deep hollow beside Moyers Run along Rt 4 & 28 about 3 mile west of Cabins. School probably opened in early 1900's and closed 1940 and pupils were transported to Petersburg.
Maysville- The first school building may have been constructed before WV became a state. The second building was located on the hill west of the present UM Church. The third building was originally the Grant County Courthouse which was where the UM Church stands.  The fourth school was the present UM Church building. The fifth building is where the school is now presently located which was built 1950.
Medley- Located in the village of Medley. It opened 1885 and closed in 1949.
Mountain Dale- Located 6 mile south of Petersburg and 1/2 mile west of the Pansy PostOffice at the foothills of Cave Mt.  Thought to be built in the late 1800'2 and closed in 1953.
Mountain Top- Located on the Keplinger Road 2 mile south of Rt 42 and 3 mile from Maysville. Thought to have been constructed in the 1860'2 and operated till 1950 when consolidated with Maysville.
Mt. Hope- Located 6 mile south of Petesburg and east of Rt 220 in the Middle Mt and 2 1/2 mile east of St John Church. The Mt Hope Community has served by 2 school buildings. The first one was probably built soon after the Civil War until 1920. The school closed in 1955 and the pupils were transferred to Petersburg.
Mt Storm- The earliest school was reportly built around 1840 and was located about 1 mile east of Mt Storm on Rt 42. Fire destroyed the school in 1885.  The school was then moved to the corner of Rt 42 and 50 adjacent to the site of the DOH . This school continued until 1940 when a new 4 room brick building was opened until 1975 when it closed and the pupils were moved to the new Union High and Union Elem. Schools 2 mile west of Mt Storm on Rt 50.
