Something you should know: When Shinta's parents died of cholera, he was sold to slave traders. The company was attacked by a group of men, but was saved by Hiko Seijurou,
now his master. Shinta was the only survivor, and Hiko took Shinta in as his student, renaming him to Kenshin. Kenshin was taught Hiten Mitsurugi Ryu.
Kenshin eventually leaves Hiko and becomes an assassin for the Ishin Shishi (Chosu). Along his path he meets up with Yukishiro Tomoe, of whom he falls in love with (and kills her
accidentally because he was halg blinded). After he helps to bring about the Meiji Era, he swears that he'll never kill again and begins to use a Sakabatou (reversed-blade sword). He wanders about for ten years until he meets up with Kaoru in Tokyo.

Something you should know: Kaoru, first of all, is a bad cook, and is very hot-tempered. When her father
died, Kaoru heads the Kamiya Dojo (she teaches Kamiya Kasshin Ryu, which is a technique meant to protect, not to
kill {look at the picture above for her dojo!!}) and lives alone (although Ayame, Suzume, and Dr. Genzai come over frequently, but they aren't in the manga). When Hiruma Gohei (an old student of her father who was
"expelled") comes around, she loses all of her students along with her only source of income. Kenshin comes around during this time and gets rid of Gohei for her, but she still has a lack of students. Kenshin decides to stay with her (even though he's a Rurouni
[vagabond]). After a while, Yahiko comes about, of whom she takes up as a student, then Sanosuke, etc. As time progresses, Kaoru begins to have feelings for Kenshin, but is too chicken
(hehe!!) to admit it.

Something you should know: Yahiko's parents died with all of these debts to a gang called Yakuza. Yahiko is taught to be a pick-pocket
(and he was good at it!) until he pays back the debt, but continues to do so even after the debt is paid back.
(in short, thegang used him) He runs into Kenshin and Kaoru in the market and attempts to steal his money on the bridge, where Kenshin willingly gives it to him.
Yahiko gets mad because he says he doesn't like people giving money to them.
He says it's like charity and he isn;t that desperate. Kenshin ends up saving Yahiko from the Yakuza and informs him that he will learn to use a sword (much to Kaoru and Yahiko's despair). Yahiko starts to learn Kamiya Kasshin Ryu
(the style of non-killing), but also tries to imitate some of Kenshin's more simple
attacks.
He simply idolizes Kenshin.
Sagara Sanosuke

Something you should know: Sanosuke was originally a member of the Sekihoutai (a group that wanted to help the Meiji government, but were eventually killed off). Sanosuke pledged revenge on the Meiji government and ended up in Tokyo. He became a gangster learned to fight and use a Zanbatou (this really huge sword that only Sano would be able to carry so easily). Nicknamed Zanza, he became a man for hire, which is how he eventually got into a fight with Kenshin (He was hired by Hiruma Gohei). Sano finds out that Kenshin used to work with the Meiji government and gets quite angry, which is the only reason he was able to fight for so long. Well, he ends up losing the fight and decides to hang with Kenshin for a while (and becomes another freeloader for Kaoru to handle).

Something you should know: Megumi's family lived in Aizu and were famous for the knowledge of medicines. She was orphaned when her family was killed in a fire. She moved to Tokyo, dreaming of becoming a doctor and ends up being offered an apprenticeship with a doctor who worked for Takeda Kanryu, a drug dealer. The doctor was killed, and Megumi was forced to replace the doctor as a producer of a dangerous opium. One of Sanosuke's friends died when taking the opium, and Megumi, meanwhile, had escaped from Kanryu. He sent the Oniwa Banshuu after her, so Sanosuke, Kenshin, and the rest agreed to help Megumi, regardless her past. After helping Megumi, Kenshin convinces Megumi to become a doctor and assist Doctor Genzai.
