18. Most Memorable APBA Moment (sentences/paragraphs OK here): My 1998 draft in the now extinct Sunbelt Winter League. After the 97 season I knew that I could not compete with the pitching I had so I traded all my front line players for draft picks, Piazza, Bonds, Mo Vaughn, Edgar Martinez etc. After the trades ended I had the first three picks in the first round and a total of seven first round picks. I also went into the draft with four second round picks and even more third and fourth round picks. The first three picks were Andruw Jones, Scott Rolen and Darrin Erstad. Some of my picks outside the first round turned out well also, Todd Walker and Dimitri Young in second. A year later I traded Dimitri Young for Todd Helton. In the later rounds I picked, Driefort, Urbina, Mike Sweeney, Tony Batista and Kevin Young. Not a bad draft. Too bad the league folded last year. My lineup for the 2000 season would have been 1b Helton, 2b Castillo, ss Rodriguez, 3b Rolen, C Lieberthal, lf Erstad, cf Jones, rf Shawn Green, dh Jenkins, Bench Nevin, T. Walker, Burnitz, Sexton.
19. If you had a chance to have dinner with any baseball player that ever lived, who would that be? Babe Ruth, I’m sure he would have shown me a real good time.
20. General Comments (Do
you like the DH? Do you like interleague play? Have you ever
rolled any No Hitters or Perfect games? Ever end a game in a “Walk
Off Home Run?) I enjoy using the DH in APBA but not in real life. This
league like most APBA leagues has less teams than real life baseball so
everyone has extra hitters. I like to get those hitters in the game. In
real life I am a National League purest and like the extra strategy used.
I have had several other great
moments playing APBA. I won two titles in the Sunbelt Winter League 1992
and 1993. Bonds was always a great player for me and I owned him for nine
Sunbelt Winter League seasons. He has been probably one of the great APBA
players ever because of his fielding, power and on base percentage. I love
trading and I have made several big trades over the years. I once traded
Wil Clark, Darren Daulton and Albert Belle for Piazza, Mo Vaughn and Justice.
A couple of years ago I traded Mondesi, V. Guerrero and Niffi Perez for
Alex Rodriguez. I would still make that trade as Rodriguez is worth it.
All in all I love playing this game and look forward to a long relationship
with everyone in the New Era League.
