| 6715ft GHANDRUNG DEC-00 N28 22 37.6 E83 48 28.2 Finally a rest! Nathan with Sherpas. Nathan wearing his everpresent Triple H (HHH) shirt. Nathan became friends with Nawong (second from left) who taught him how to count in Sherpa. One of the obstacles to Nepals growth (besides the geography) was that every village pretty much had it's own language. There are probably 100 different languages spoken with Nepali and English dominent. In the background is Annapurnna South. This is a large town with many hotels and little streets. We visited ACAP which is the Annapurnna Conservation headquarters. They had lots of interesting info and a movie to boot. It's a worthwhile stop. It is the second largest Gurung village with Sikilas being the first (we were there in 1999 on our first trip to Nepal). Even before the tents are set up, the Tibetan traders move in. One girl in particular had excellent English and of course did a lot of business. When China invaded Tibet many people escaped to Nepal and surrounding countries. The politics of this are complicated, but you cannot help but feel for the people who were forced to leave their country. Next day we hiked up to Hilltown. It was one of the most scenic places as you can see. For three dollars a day you can stay here with room and board at their hotel. That's Machepucharre in the background.. 2350 HILLTOWN-DEC-00 N28 23 50.0 E83 48 35.8 |
| School visit in Landruk It was always a pleasure to visit the schools along the trekking route. Nepal is so poor and we always felt like helping in some way. This was the way we could help and learn at the same time. Here the children are singing traditional Nepalese songs to us as we sit on the steps and listen. We would also sing songs back to them which would make them smile. We then would get a tour of the principles office (ah...brings back memories) and the classrooms. The classrooms are very bare with just wooden benches and a table only for the teacher. They also had blackboards. This school had no electricity. We would then sign a register and leave a nice donation. One time (on the last trip in 1999 on the other side of Machupacharre), we left such a large tip, that the school was so happy that they gave the children the rest of the day off!
