| Now usually i start my reviews out with the story and then i go on to tell you what i thought about the film, followed by the scores. in this review, instead of my usual formula i will compare the remake of the classic texas chainsaw to the original to start off on a good note, the remake of TCM took i completely different route as the original. the story was switched around in many ways. in this version instead of the 5 friends going to check on there grandfathers grave after a series of grave robbings, they actually changed it to a more logical and closer to heart scenerio. the 5 friends were on there way to see a Lynrd Skynrd concert. as in the first one, they pick up a strange hitch hiker, but once again they also change the story around. this time instead of the hitchhiker being part of all the madness, SHE is actually one of the demented families victims and winds up killing herself in the van forcing the friends to stop at the "infamous" gas station where they try to get help from the store owner. the store owner calls the sheriff who you guessed it, is part of the family. as the friends start dissapearing and the brutal story starts to unfoled, you start to wonder if anyone is safe in this world. the remake of texas chainsaw massacre is without a doubt one of the best remakes that i have yet to see, not only does it stick to the demented and disturbing routes as the original but it also mixes them up a bit taking it own angle to the story. sometimes the changes in the remake are simply better than the original. one thing that i found took away the impact of the remake was that it focused a little bit to much on the physical side of the victims pain, where as in the original it focused more on the mental torture our friends go threw. the film in itself was much much more graphic than the original but didnt quite get the affect that the original had. the sheriff made the biggest impact in my opinion with the horrific interrogation scene in the van. the film in a whole was much better put togethor than the original and had a much higher budget, but what makes the texas chainsaw massacre a classic is not high budget special effects, not grosse out gore or even the reality of it. the main thing that makes the texas chainsaw massacre a classic is that it stays with you and puts an image in your mind of utter horror. and that is what horror films should be about. if you walk out of a horror movie scared and have nightmares its standard. but if you walk out of a horror movie with a new aspect on life, its magic. Gore: a lot more blood was shed in this remake than the original. we get severed limbs, meathooks, nasty cuts, gunshot through the head. and a "salt" scene that will have you cringe Nudity: damnit! still no nudity Pace: it kept to its roots in that it is still a short movie with a lot of action. Scary: a lot more frightful and suspenceful moments were put togethor in this remake. but as far as staying with you, it doesnt even come close to the original Story: if it would have been the same as the original it would have got an average score, but what made this remake great was that it took its own twist on the tale. Overall: the film was much better put togethor than the original, but thats not what the original was about. it was about putting an image in your head of the "fucked reality" we live in |
