James Milton Philyaw, b. Oct. 30, 1878, Caldwell, N.C. d. May 29, 1923, Caldwell, N.C. Burial: Greene Cemetery, Edgemont, N.C. Listed in the 1900 Census as a teamster, and his residence in 1900 is listed as Globe, Caldwell, N.C.
From a family story: James Milton first met Miss Doshia Coffey and dated. According to family members, Doshia fell hard for James. But James soon met Doshia's sister Sarah Jane. And that was that. James and Sarah fell in Love and James only had eyes for Sarah. According to family, Doshia never married, and that on many occaisions she had told them that she had only loved one man in her life and that was James. But lost him to her sister.( Oh thats so sad)
James Milton married Sarah Jane Coffey, Feb. 5, 1905 in Caldwell, N.C. Sarah was the daughter of Joseph Burgess Coffey and Margaret Laquista Gragg-Coffey. She was born in 1881 in Caldwell, N.C. And died in 1957.
James and Sarah's children:
1. Frank K. 2. Lloyd Harvey (my grandfather)** 3. Lewis Ward 4. Arthur 5. Collis Linnie 6. Pansy 7. Claude Burl According to Family, James Milton was known to have the finest horses in Caldwell. He was said to be a kind and gentle man. Liked by many. Guess thats where my father got his kindness. After the death of her husband, Sarah lived for many years with her son Claude, in N.C. Of all the Philyaw children, Claude is the only child left. No other information will be given to protect his privacy.
After the death of James, Sarah was left to raise her youngest three children on her own.(Frank, Pansy and Claude) Her oldest sons left North Carolina as soon as they were old enough, taking jobs in the construction industry and moving to Virginia.(Lloyd, Lewis, Arthur, Collis) Frank and Claude were both in the Armed Services, but Frank was killed during WWII in Germany. According to family members, Franks body wasnt returned to the United States for a couple of years after the war. He had been buried in Germany, but by the request of family members, was finally returned home. They knew it was him by the red hair and a ring that he was wearing. Frank is on the WWII Honors List.
