Gideon Philyaw
April 22, 1839  -  February 9, 1925
Gideon was the son of John Philyaw and Catherine Yarber-Philyaw. He was the twin brother to Simeon Philyaw, together they served in the North Carolina 26th  Infantry Troop F.  Company F were the flag bearers for the charge during Picketts Charge on July 3, 1863, at Gettysburg, Pa. Both Gideon and Simeon were wounded, but survived. Gideon was wounded in the hip and Simeon was wounded in the thigh and captured. Simeon was hospitalized at Gettysburg, until transferred to David's Island, New York Harbor. Paroled at David's Island and transferred to City Point, Va. in a prisoner exchange. Absent from detail from Jan. - Feb. 1864, Listed as absent without leave in Sept. 1864, and listed as a deserter in Oct. 1864.
Gideon married Martha Teague on March 26, 1862 in Lenoir, N.C.  Martha was the daughter of John Teague and Susannah Pike, she was born in 1845 in Watauga, N.C., and died 1907 Lenoir, N.C. ** Martha was said to be full blood Cherokee, I have found a couple of Teague's on the Dawes Roll, Cherokee Minor's by blood, but havent had the time to research this any further for now.

Both Gideon and Martha are buried at the Greene Cemetery, Edgemont, N.C.(Caldwell County)
