TRIBE OF LEVI: Music From Up Above
The Tribe of Levi music seems to come in from everywhere.  With influences as diverse as Lee Ritenour, Jay Durias, Babyface, Joe and Eric Benet, its live sound is quite refreshing.   Every member gets a chance to shine.  The sound is a welcome change from the usual show band-mimics-EWF feel.  One gets the feeling there is an artistic integrity to their music.  No lets party catcalls from Zaq, no sell-out music from Melissa.

No choreo, Zaq says, to which Mark interjects: No matching neckties!

The nice thing about it is, even if were all so different, it comes together, in a way, Melissa says, the rap, the jazz, we just gel.

As a group, the Tribe has definitely gelled.  After gigs, they often head over to Charlies, a hole-in-the-wall where they let their hair down.  Gig days are gig days, though, and they meet regularly to hone their craft.

The dedication seems to have paid off.  The band is now hard at work on their debut album under Neo Records, the subsidiary of Viva that is home to such acts as Freestyle and Passage.  Jingle Buena, Jungee Marcelo and Robert More are among the stellar names contributing to the effort, although the Tribe arranges its own tracks to reflect its roots.  A single should be out by late this year, with the album geared for an early 2001 release.

As for live performances, well, theyre booked solid.  Its the love for the music, Melissa says.  The love is evident as the Tribe of Levi leaves me to play its first set.  The energy isnt manufactured, the combinations authentic, the playful fun onstage genuine.  If this group is indeed consecrated for music, well then, the Lord bless em and keep em, singing for the love of music and a Higher Power far greater than any of them.
