Here are some quick substitutes for Mane and Tail Detanglers when you don't got that handy bottle of Show Sheen around. :)
Silicone Spray (aerosol lubricant)
Spray directly onto mane/tale comb; onto brush to apply to body.
Comments/Drawbacks.
Excellent detangling properties, long term prevention of tangles and dirt accummulation, easy removal of burrs, good results on mud encrusted tails, no pre-treatment bath needed, no skin reactions or other side effects. "Industrial" smell, and as with all other detanglers has potential for a dangerously slippery saddle area. Contains flammable solvents that may irritate delicate tissues, label cautious against prolonged skin contact therefore use gloves. Spray onto brush or comb (not directly onto horses hair), directing the spray with the little plastic tube that comes with it. Don't spray on or near eyes, nostrils, lips, open wounds, or genitals. Not for routine use.
WD-40 spray.
Spray directly onto knots and or burrs to minimize breakage during detangling.
Comments/Drawbacks
Better then nothing for badly tangled manes and tails. "Industrial" smell with an oily residue that is a dirt/dust magnet therefore needing a bath at the next opportunity. Avoid use if you can't wash out the residual oily mess within the next 2 days. The residue, as well as the grime it attracts could be cause for skin irritation and possible infection. Apply to only the worst knots, burrs or mats in the tail, or to a brush or comb for detangling the mane.
Johnson & Johnson's nonaerosol spray for babies, Liquid Infusium 23 leave in hair treatment poured into trigger-type spray bottle.
Apply directly onto mane/tail hair and work in and comb through
Comments/Drawbacks.
Reasonable effective, mild, pleasant smell. Possible to tame for badly matted or burred hair, not the greatest if hair is filthy or mud-caked unless you can wash the mane or tail first, But still better then nothing.
