Main features of the family : Turbinate or top - shaped shells with a rounded aperture, nacreous within. Operculum calcareous with a corneous layer on the inner surface; outer surface of the operculum smooth or showing ridges and / or granules. 4 species of turban shells have a verified occurrence in the Galápagos Islands.
