Chat  Silayan  represented the Philippines in the 1980 Miss Universe Pageant in Seoul, Korea. Chat conti- nued  the tradition of wearing the TERNO for the Parade of Nations where she proudly introduced herself
as : "Rosario Silayan, Philippines!" Chat scored high enough to qualify as one of the sem-finalists. During the  interview  portion, emcee Bob Barker and the whole audience at the Sejong Cultural Center sang her 'Happy Birthday.'  Asked whether she would follow in her actor-father's footsteps and join the movies, she flatly  said : "No,  because  that  is not a woman's job." Chat would later disagree with her own statements when  she  fell  to  the lure of Philippine local showbusiness and became quite a successful actress herself!
The  swimsuit  portion  of  the  pageant  saw  Chat  reveal her whistle-bait figure and the now much copied hands  on  hips  pose. Eileen Ford of the Ford Modeling Agency, one of the night's judges, consistently gave Miss  Philippines  high  scores  for her charm, grace, poise and uniqueness. Chat was in competition mood!
Chat's  most  shining  moment  was during the evening gown competition.  As  the  Korean  Children's  Choir sang 'When You  Wish  Upon  A  Star,'  Miss Philippines outshone all the other  contestants  with  her  Renee  Salud  'mermaid' gown
with  matching  stole,  truly  one  of  the  most unforgettable evening gowns ever to grace the history of the Miss Universe Pageant!  Chat  advanced  to  the finals together with Misses
USA,  Sweden, Scotland and New Zealand. Bob Barker's final question to her : "If given the chance to meet any im-portant  person  living  in  the  world today, who would it be and why?" Chat replied, "I really don't have anyone in particular  in mind, I would want to meet though a person who is into politics.." By evening's end, Miss Sweden was 4th Runner-Up; Miss Philippines, 3rd Runner-Up; Miss New Zealand, 2nd Runner-Up; Miss Scotland, First Runner-Up;  and  the  USA's  Shawn  Weatherly was the new Miss Universe! Good finish for Chat, who almost won the title!

Abbygale  Williamson  Arenas  was  the  country's  bet  to the 1997 Miss Universe Pageant. For the parade of nations,  she  chose  a  'barrio'  inspired style of the TERNO with matching 'salakot' appliqued with a cascade
of  native  shells.  The costume itself  with its earth tone colors typical of the fiesta scene in rural Philippines was  unique,  but  the  hat  was  a serious mistake, for it took attention away from Abbygale's beautiful face.

Abbygale  succeeded Aileen Damiles, Miss Philippines Universe 1996, as the year's Miss Photogenic; second in a row for the country!  Pageant fans voted for her via the internet. Abbygale could have easily slipped through the semi-finals, but unfor-tunately,  lost  the  10th slot to Miss India, Nafisa Joseph. What happened? Judging from the preliminary scores above, her interview  went  very  well,  but the swimsuit and evening gown pulled her down!  The swimsuit score could have been much higher  had  Abbygale  been  sent  to  Caracas, Venezuela  for  training  and  given enough time to prepare for the pageant!

Yes,  the  evening gown put her down! What a silly mistake that ruined the chances of a very capable candidate. Abby could have  looked  smashing  in  a  form fitting, black, sequined, strapless evening number instead of this somber debutante ball gown that did nothing but hide her enviable assets! Abby had all the qualities, but alas, the packaging was grossly incorrect!
