John Kerry on the Environment and Energy
John Kerry has been an environmental leader throughout his career in the U.S.
Senate. He is in his fourth term as a Senator. He has a lifetime average of 96%
on the League of Conservation Voters rating system on legislation related to
protecting the environment that has come before the Congress.
As President he will:
1) Remove the global gag rule on international family planning assistance so that
the problem of global population growth, the underlying cause of all major
environmental problems, can be addressed. This is a rule imposed by Bush in
his first days in office that prohibits organizations abroad that from receiving
U.S. funding for family planning assistance that use non-U.S. funds to perform
or advocate for abortions. This is one of the most destructive things that Bush
has done and Kerry will undo this and provide leadership in this area.
2) Promote energy independence and increased reliance on renewable energy,
including solar and wind energy. This will help reduce our production of greenhouse
gases that cause global warming and climate change. He will also reassert American
leadership in the international community to tackle climate change and other key
environmental challenges.
3) He will also promote a new and permanent commitment to "Green and Clean"
communities. This will also include a commitment to environmental justice.
4) He will also promote a new "Conservation Covenant" to protect and restore
our nation's parks, lands and other treasures.
5) He will lead the fight to reverse the Bush rollbacks of our Clean Air laws.
6) He will also lead a campaign to "restore America's waters" and to make our
waters "drinkable, swimable, and fishable."
Robert F. Kennedy, Jr has endorsed him.
