How John Kerry will get our economy moving again and restore the conditions
necessary for promoting prosperity and economic justice
More than any other candidate for the Democratic Party's nomination, John Kerry
will know how to restore balanced economic growth that will help every American,
not just the richest 1% of Americans. Through a range of programs he will know
how to stimulate the economy so that the unemployment rate wil come down, and
the conditions for prosperity for every American will be created. This is vitally
important, because Bush's tax cuts mostly benefitting the rich have returned our
federal government to circumstances where we are running huge deficits every
year. How to restore conditions that will allow us to reduce these deficits so that
all Americans will not be hurt will require thorough mastery of the issues.
The approach of one other major candidate, Howard Dean, a rigid emphasis
on budget balance, will not work. Balanced budgets are important. And John
Kerry has plans for how to produce them. However, restoring broad economic
growth is even more important and has to come first if we are to be successful
in achieving reaching both goals. Restoring broad economic growth, not just the
high-end growth produced by the Bush administration, is vital if we are to
create jobs for all Americans and see sustained and significant real wage
growth for average workers.
John Kerry wil promote balanced economic growth in many ways including the
following:
1) Promoting energy independence. This will include producing at least 20% of
all of our electricity from renewable sources like solar and wind energy bly 2020,
more energy efficient appliances for homes and businesses and more fuel
efficient automobiles. This alone will produce hundreds of thousands of
good jobs.
2) A program of infrastructure building and repair for such things as schools, roads,
and mass transit.
3) Rolling back the Bush tax cuts for the richest American, but keeping the middle
class tax cuts that were passed, to help pay for vitally needed government services
and to reduce the deficitis
4)Tax breaks to expand manufacturing jobs in the United States
5) Controlling health care costs so our industries can compete.
6) Make trade work for America. Review past trade agreements,
and insist on core labor and environmental standards in future
agreements.
7) Make four years of college affordable. Create a college opportunity
tax credit and pay college tuition for students that give two years
of service to America.
8) Protect worker rights.
Increase the minimum wage and index it to inflation. Improve workplace
health and safety and assure fair overtime rules, and a worker's right
to join a union.
These are just some of the ways John Kerry will lead the United States in
restoring the conditions necessary for prosperity and economic justice.
