| Chapter Fifty Nine To manage people is like forming an ideology of frugality. It is because one is frugal that one can be materially satisfied early, once this is achieved, the people will value the need for virtues, once this is achieved, there is nothing which cannot be overcome, once this is achieved, then one does not know the dangers of saturation. If such saturation is avoided, then there is a Nation to be built, with this Nation, Ontological Sustenance is secured and it can last for long. Therefore we can say, such is the art of making the Traditions of a Nation deep, strong and firm, only then can we see the its lasting longevity working harmoniously in accordance to Dao. (Heng: Daoist Political Philosophy has never failed to surprise me. Look at the divinity of this Chapter talking about nation-building. It will make many new countries ashamed of their own incapabilities. The naive thinking of pushing only for Economic success is sure to bring about Divine Retribution (Tian Qian), not only for government but also create endless sufferings for its people. |
