Ah Heng's Daoism Page
Chapter Twenty Five

In the beginning of all entities,
first there is Heaven, then there is Earth.
One singular Emptiness,
It stands and does not change,
seasonally rotates and does not decay,
from which Mother Nature rears all living things.
I do not know its name,
I can only call it 'Dao'.

Perhaps if I were to accord it a name,
I will call it 'Big' (
Da).
However, 'Big' connotes slow decadence,
(Heng: because it now has a 'name')
and is vulnerable to time erosion,
which will bring about its later contrarian negation (
Fan) (Small).

Therefore I say that Dao is something that is indefinitely 'Big',
Heaven is 'Big',
Earth is 'Big',
The Emperor is also 'Big'.
In the myriad societies there are the four 'Bigs',
the Emperor is among one of them.
(Heng: Political Metaphysics! Something Western Philosophy can never conceptualize.)

The Law of human beings is that of the Earth,
the Law of the Earth is that of the Heavens,
the Law of the Heavens is that of the Dao,
The Law of the Dao is simply Naturalness (
Zi Ran).
