| Chapter Two The world that knows 'beauty' as beauty, therefore also knows ugliness. The world that knows 'goodness' as good, therefore also knows evil. Therefore any manifested existence gives birth to its negation: Easy and difficult completes itself, short and long makes shapes, high and low defines falling, pitch and sound creates harmony, front and back attaches itself. (Heng: Therefore Cosmological Dichotomies/Dualism arises, but they are in fact one and the same thing throughout. Human beings define them as such.) Therefore the Enlightened exists* in Wu Wei (non-deliberation), and acts in accordance to the unspoken teachings: All myriad creatures live but are not acted on, procreates but are not strictly confined, does actions but are not relied upon, successfully completes and creates no attention. Because there is no attention that the completion is an Eternal one. (*From now on, instead of using the word 'exist', I use the more appropriate word 'dasein'. 'Dasein' is a Heideggerian concept and a German word that roughly means 'being-there'. In Heidegger's philosophy, more importantly, 'Dasein' means to exist within the inter-connectedness of the world.) |
