European
Fast Food
27/05/99
The 1999 European Fast
Food report presents an
overview of US-style fast foods
(burgers, pizza and chicken) in five key markets: UK, France, Germany, Italy and
Spain. Case studies of the RoI, Czech Republic, Sweden and The Netherlands are
included for the first time.
The results of Mintel's exclusive European Fast Food survey are central to
this report, which enables menu selections and prices to be compared across
Europe. Research was largely conducted during March 1999, in London, UK;
Cologne, Germany; Paris, France; Barcelona, Spain; and Rome, Italy.
Additionally, the case studies were researched in Dublin, RoI; Prague, Czech
Republic; Stockholm, Sweden; and Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
It is the second time Mintel has covered this market, with the first study
published two years ago, in April 1997. However, the UK market is regularly
tracked by Mintel, and relevant titles in Mintel's report series include:
- Special Report, British Lifestyles, 1999

Definition
Mintel's European Fast Food
report concentrates on the US-style fast foods, burgers, pizza and
chicken, as offered in the chains that are found Europe-wide, McDonald's, Burger
King, Pizza Hut, and KFC. Other international or national fast
food chains that are not
distributed Europe-wide are also discussed, but not compared country to country.
National specialties such as fish and chips in the UK, ice cream in Italy and
bocadillos in Spain are also discussed, but consumer expenditure is not
quantified.
Data relate specifically to the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain, although
the Czech Republic, RoI, Sweden and The Netherlands are also included, and some
consideration is given to a number of other European countries within The Supply
Structure section.
Mintel's definition of fast food outlets encompasses
burger, chicken and pizza restaurants and takeaway/delivery chains, for the
purposes of the market size of this report. Menus are limited in terms of choice
of items, and the offer is fast
or self-service (pizza is generally the only sector where outlets offer table
service).
A chain is defined as having more than one branch, all with the same name: and
owned/operated by the same company.
International and national chains are included, and menu/price comparisons are
only drawn between brands which have a presence in the majority of the European
markets surveyed.
Market sizes are given for five of the nine territories in the survey, since
these are the largest, and longest established. Of the other four countries,
case studies are provided, using sample menus of the chains present.
In the pizza sector, individual pizzerias, or Italian trattorias with pizza on
the menu are excluded from the market size and the discussion. Pasta outlets are
discussed in places, but are not included in Mintel's market size, which differs
from that in Mintel's other relevant reports, where pizza and pasta chains are
valued together as a fast food
sector.
