What is an intranet?

1-A Web site or group of Web sites belonging to an organization, accessible only by the organization's members, employees, or others with authorization. An intranet's Web sites look and act just like any other Web sites, but the firewall surrounding an intranet fends off unauthorized access.

2-Like the Internet itself, intranets are used to share information. Secure intranets are now the fastest-growing segment of the Internet because they are much less expensive to build and manage than private networks based on proprietary protocols.

3-An Intranet is the use of Internet technologies within an organization (or company) to achieve better results than the conventional means of data access and transfer. Intranet helps in cutting costs, easy and fast accessibility of day to day information.

How is an intranet different from the internet?

2. An intranet has access to the Internet but the Internet does NOT have access to an intranet.

How Secure is the Intranet?

It is not secure in its present form! Where a true Intranet resides behind a firewall and has security controls in place to restrict access to designated employees, the Intranet has no security built into it. The Intranet is designed for employee use only. The web addresses of the Department Intranet should not be released to the public.

However, with the lack of security controls, all content placed on the Intranet should be considered as being able to be viewed by the public, because it may be! Security may be added to the Intranet at a later date as it grows in use, the need develops and funding and support becomes available.

How is the Prêt a Manger intranet structured?

The Intranet is currently composed of 1 Intranet. The  Intranet is linked to the central departments and services for essential information. The intranet homepage is maintained by the Prêt a Manger webmaster. All departments have been designated editors who maintain their departmental website and the links within it. Currently, the Intranet is  maintained by Kirsty Gallagher.  She will also therefore take care of maintaining links to the departmental pages.  Each departmental link should be maintained by an employee in that department. All information is structured in a clear and easy manner so that data can be accessed without any difficulty.

What type of material do staff place on the Intranet?

The majority of information contained is mostly read only material in an effort to keep essential administrative and management information more up to date and accessible to employees.
