On Monday, November 29, Godzilla received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The ceremony took place at 11:30 am, on Hollywood Boulevard, in front of Grauman's Chinese Theater. Godzilla series producer Shogo Tomiyama, several members of the cast and crew of Godzilla Final Wars, and the big G himself were there to accept the honor. While he talked about the history of the Toho series, the crowd had to help him along when it came to pronouncing the names of some of Godzilla's co-stars, such as Mothra (he called her "MOE-thra") and Destoroyah (understandable, since Toho insists on such a goofy spelling). The amiable Mr. Grant admitted that many onlookers in the crowd probably knew more of the details of Godzilla's exploits than he did. |

Shogo Tomiyama, the producer of the Godzilla series, takes the podium to address the crowd. In pretty-good English, Mr. Tomiyama thanked America for embracing the King of Monsters, and for honoring his 50th birthday in Hollywood. |

Early in the month, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors declared the month of November 2004 to be "50th Anniversary of Godzilla Month." (Click here to read the proclamation.) Above left: Tom LaBonge, a member of the LA City Council, reads the proclamation and presents an official copy to Godzilla. Above right: Mr. LaBonge gives Godzilla a loaf of pumpkin bread. (Perhaps this is a local specialty?) |
