( A3b) leaving the culture of death

"I have set before you good and evil, life and death. Choose life therefore so that you and your descendants may live." The consequence of sin is spiritual and physical death. Human beings can not defeat death. God's intervention, through Christ's death, makes it possible for people to escape eternal death and receive eternal life. Those who are trapped in the culture of death can not escape on their own. They need God's help, which comes through Jesus Christ and other people. ******* As of this date, 07-07-17, there are 11 items in this folder. ******* item 1 November 2002 edition of the Whistleblower THE FLIGHT FROM PUBLIC SCHOOLS ******* item 2 HALLELUJAH - AN IMPORTANT "PRO-CHOICE" POLITICIAN CONVERTED TO PRO-LIFE CAUSE ******* item 3 WOMEN WHO REGRET THEIR ABORTIONS RALLY AT MARCH FOR LIFE ******* item 4 ZOGBY POLL - PARENTS SUPPORT ABSTINENCE ******* item 5 POPE JOHN PAUL II'S STATEMEMENT ON THE DEATH PENALTY ******* item 6 WHY I STOPPED ABORTING CHILDREN ******* item 7 WOMEN REGRET THEIR ABORTIONS, USE PAIN TO HELP OTHERS ******* item 8 WHY I JOINED THE CHRISTIAN HERITAGE PARTY ******* item 9 BRITISH GIRL WHO HAD SECRET ABORTION IS PREGNANT AGAIN, WILL KEEP HER BABY ******* item 10 DR. It shows how and why the government's education system has become so corrupt that former U.S. Secretary of Education William Bennett now goes on national television to exhort parents to take their children out of the learning institutions over which he once presided and to homeschool them instead. ******* Documenting the explosion of interest in private schools and home education, November's Whistleblower then zeroes in on the fascinating world of homeschooling showing how and why home-taught children consistently outperform their public- and private-schooled peers on standardized tests, and are now being actively sought out by Ivy League colleges. ******* Contents include: ******* "Breaking the government education monopoly" by Joseph Farah; ******* "Take your kids out of public schools," by Art Moore, on why America's most famous U.S. secretary of education, joined by leading family advocates like Dr. James Dobson and Dr. Laura Schlessinger, say its time to jump ship; ******* "Tune in, turn around, drop out," a powerful and inspiring essay by Joseph Farah adapted from his forthcoming book "Taking America Back" on why pulling kids out of "government indoctrination centers" is critical to reclaiming America; ******* "Why Christians don't belong in government schools," a guided tour of education hell, and how to find your way out with particular focus on Christians with school-age children, by David Kupelian; ******* "Pulling kids out of government schools" by Elizabeth Farah, a brilliant analysis of "why a state-run education system is disastrous for your children;" ******* "Homeschoolers outscore peers" by David Kupelian, showing that home-taught students consistently score higher than their public/private school counterparts; ******* "The joy of homeschooling" by Rebecca Hagelin, on what it's like to learn without anxiety, pressure and confusion; ******* "Homeschool legal fight continues" by Art Moore, showing how parents nationwide are forced to battle officials and bureaucrats in order to teach their own children. (In California, education authorities currently claim homeschooling is illegal); ******* "Homeschoolers arrive on campus" by Claire McCusker, in which Stanford and other Ivy League college admissions officers praise homeschoolers for their "intellectual vitality;" ******* "New college seeks homeschooled talent" by Art Moore, on Virginia's Patrick Henry College where 95 percent of the students are homeschoolers; and much more. ******* "The information and insight in November's education issue are crucial to our freedom as individuals and as a nation," said WorldNetDaily's editor and CEO Joseph Farah. "I urge all WND readers to subscribe to Whistleblower especially if you have school-aged children. Zell Miller of Georgia told me last week in an interview for Human Events, "and it just grabbed ahold of me very strongly that what if one of my four great-grandchildren or four grandchildren had been one of those that never did get to enjoy the life that they have now." ******* I asked: "So, now you've actually come all the way around to the opinion that you would like to see Roe vs. Wade overturned, and you would like to see unborn children protected in law in this country?" ******* "That's exactly right," said Miller. "I've come to feel very strongly about that." ******* In his best-selling book, "A National Party No More -- The Conscience of a Conservative Democrat," Miller dedicates a chapter (entitled "Abortion and a God Above") to describing his conversion from a pro-choice Democrat who supported Roe v. Wade, to a pro-life Democrat who doesn't. Many sources influenced his thinking. They range from the birth of his great-grandchildren, to Sean Hannity's apt comparison of Roe to Dred Scott, to Newsweek's cover of an unborn child, to two female college students who challenged him on the right-to-life, to signs carried by some women in the March for Life. ******* ---Read Townhall.com's review of Sen. Miller's book --- ******* "The most poignant sight for me at this year's annual pro-life march and demonstration in Washington, D.C.," wrote Miller, "was the large number of women holding signs saying they regretted their abortions." ******* Unlike some pessimists who argue that abortion is a settled issue, Miller, a former history professor, brings a positive perspective to the cause. "Just as Dred Scott was overturned, I believe Roe v. Wade someday will also be rejected," he writes. ******* His optimism reminds me of a concept I learned in college Shakespeare lectures. It is called discordia concors: To mirror nature, art must show how order inevitably emerges from chaos. The perceptible rational design of God's creation is the inalterable template against which all works of music, literature and public policy must be judged. It is the natural law, which St. Paul said is written on every heart, and which America embraced as our founding creed in the Declaration of Independence. Any human law that acts against this divine law cannot be deemed right any more than caterwauling can be deemed a symphony. ******* Just as sound without design is mere noise, a story of human suffering without moral resolution would be, well, a tale signifying nothing. Shakespeare ends even his most bitter tragedies by pointing the way back to moral and civic order. The weak and vacillating Hamlet gives way to the strong and steady Fortinbras. Things will be rotten in Denmark no more. ******* Zell Miller is no Hamlet. Ask him a straight question, and he gives you a straight answer. ******* I asked if he believed that by continuing the debate on abortion in America "more Democrats such as yourself can be converted and that in the end we can actually overturn Roe vs. Wade and return to being a pro-life country?" ******* "I think without any question it ought to continue to be debated," he said, "because I think there are more and more people out there hopefully like I am who are troubled by the way that it is now. And I think the more discussion, the more troubled they may become, until they finally come to the same conclusion that I came to." ******* In his book, Miller noted a "national trend" toward the pro-life position. "Support for abortion rights," he wrote, "has steadily dropped for a decade from 67 percent in the early 1990s to 54 percent in 2003." He concludes: "I think the reason this is happening is that the debate has shifted from the right of the woman to the right of the baby." ******* Pro-lifers take heed. Raise your signs high, and march on. The Supreme Court cannot declare dissonance a song, nor make human hearts embrace the killing of unborn children. There will be a happy ending: the chaos let loose by Roe will give way to restored justice. ******* Zell Miller, a Democrat, has bravely pointed the way. ******* 2003 Creators Syndicate ************************************************************************************************************************** ******* item 3 WOMEN WHO REGRET THEIR ABORTIONS RALLY AT MARCH FOR LIFE ******* Date: Sat, 24 Jan 2004 21:50:06 EST ******* From: "Steven Ertelt" and "LifeNews.com Report" ******* ---------------------------------------- For news updated throughout the day, visit www.LifeNews.com ---------------------------------------- ******* Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- The post-abortion movement is picking up steam and women who are sharing the tragedies of their abortion experiences are rapidly becoming the face of the pro-life movement and encouraging young women not to make the same mistakes they did. Led by actress and model Jennifer O'Neill, women who regret their abortions participated in the March for Life, where they held hundreds of signs saying just that. They also planned their own rallies to promote their message. O'Neill was joined at a rally at the Supreme Court on Thursday by actress and singer Melba Moore and Dr. Alveda King, niece of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Luana Stoltemberg, a 43 year-old from Iowa, attended the rally. She said she began regretting her abortions when she realized they had robbed her of the ability to have children. Later, she adopted children."I've had three abortions and that hurts women like me,'' she said. "It devastates us physically, mentally, spiritually and emotionally.'' Another organized post-abortion effort is Operation Outcry. They also held numerous events across the nation Thursday. "The abstinence until marriage community has always supported parents as the primary sex educators of their children. Parents want to be involved in the most sensitive subjects of their children's lives." ******* DATE: January 28, 2004 ******* Parents Overwhelmingly Prefer Their Kids Be Taught Abstinence ******* New poll also shows moms and dads strongly oppose condom-based sex education. ******* The vast majority of American parents want their children's sex education classes to emphasize abstinence until marriage, according to a new poll released today. ******* The survey, conducted by Zogby International for Focus on the Family, also found that parents strongly oppose the values and messages of comprehensive sex education, a training model that assumes teens will become sexually active and, therefore, must be given easy access to condoms. ******* In fact, a significant majority of those surveyed believe that sexual behavior is likely to lead to psychological, emotional and physical problems for teens. ******* "This poll illustrates that the people most concerned about the health and emotional well-being of America's children -- their moms and dads -- recognize that abstinence is the only surefire way to protect their kids," said Linda Klepacki, manager of the abstinence department at Focus on the Family. "As hard as the comprehensive sex-education lobby has tried to sell its 'safe-sex' message, it's clear parents aren't buying it." ******* Klepacki announced the poll results at a Washington, D.C., news conference today, an event also attended by Dr. Wade Horn, assistant secretary for children and families at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. ******* "It is gratifying to learn that parents agree with the President that the primary message we should give our children when it comes to sexual behavior is abstinence until marriage", Dr. Horn said. ******* The survey of 1,008 parents of children under 17 featured in-depth questions about the respondents' views of teenage sexual behavior, the messages contained in sex education curricula and sexual activity as it pertains to human relationships. ******* Among its highlights were: ******* Sixty-eight percent of parents want schools to teach teens that individuals who remain abstinent until marriage have the best chances of marital stability and happiness. "Abstinence programs," Klepacki said, "support this theme while comprehensive sex ed classes seldom mention marriage and do not criticize casual sex." ******* Ninety-one percent want their children to be taught that sex should be linked to the type of love and commitment found in marriage. "Abstinence programs are built upon this message while comprehensive programs present sex as a physical process," Klepacki explained. "The highest aim for comprehensive programs is the avoidance of STDs and unwanted pregnancy. Abstinence programs aim teens toward an enriched life." ******* More than 56 percent said that information about contraception should either not be taught as a subject or taught in a class separate from abstinence, such as a health or biology class. ******* Only 39.9 percent thought that abstinence and contraception should be combined in a single class. But even on that matter, only 2 percent thought that sex education should focus on teaching teens how to use condoms. "That is a shocking number," Klepacki said, "because the vast proportion of government programs in the past had as their goal getting more teens to use more condoms. It is clear that the public health establishment has been out of step with the will of America's parents. Only with the current administration has funding been dedicated to abstinence." ******* The Heritage Foundation confirmed that conclusion in an analysis of the Zogby report released at today's news conference. The report noted that $4.50 was spent on comprehensive sex education for every $1 spent on abstinence education. ******* Senator Sam Brownback also participated in the press conference. Brownback said "As we work to reauthorize abstinence education in Congress this year, and in light of President Bush's increased focus on the issue, we should take a good look at the data presented today. It is clear from this study that most parents want their children to be taught in different ways and that includes increased attention to abstinence education." ******* The Family Research Council and Concerned Women for America also took part in today's news conference. ******* For more information phone David Gasak at (719) 548-4570 ******* For Graphs of Major Findings, by Zogby contact Deanna Grimm at 605.335.3643 ******* Further information is also available at www.citizenlink.org. ******* Polling results are available at whatparentsthink.com ******* Provided by The Abstinence Clearinghouse, Founder and President: Leslee J. In his encyclical "Evangelium Vitae" (The Gospel of Life) issued March 25, 1995 after four years of consultations with the world's Roman Catholic bishops, John Paul II wrote that execution is only appropriate "in cases of absolute necessity, in other words, when it would not be possible otherwise to defend society. Today, however, as a result of steady immprovement in the organization of the penal system, such cases are very rare, if not practically nonexistent." Until this encyclical, the death penalty was viewed as sometimes permissible as a means of protecting society. The universal catechism--book of rules--for Catholics had affirmed the right of the state to punish criminals with appropriate penalties "not excluding in cases of extreme gravity, the death penalty." ******* From Para. 56 of Evangelium Vitae (The Gospel of Life), an encyclical letter on various threats to human life which Pope John Paul II issued on March 25, 1995. ******* "This is the context in which to place the problem of the death penalty. On this matter there is a growing tendency, both in the Church and in civil society, to demand that it be applied in a very limited way or even that it be abolished completely. The problem must be viewed in the context of a system of penal justice ever more in line with human dignity and thus, in the end, with God's plan for man and society. The primary purpose of the punishment which society inflicts is "to redress the disorder caused by the offence."(46) Public authority must redress the violation of personal and social rights by imposing on the offender an adequate punishment for the crime, as a condition for the offender to regain the exercise of his or her freedom. In this way authority also fulfills the purpose of defending public order and ensuring people's safety, while at the same time offering the offender an incentive and help to change his or her behaviour and be rehabilitated.(47) ******* It is clear that, for these purposes to be achieved, the nature and extent of the punishment must be carefully evaluated and decided upon, and ought not go to the extreme of executing the offender except in cases of absolute necessity: in other words, when it would not be possible otherwise to defend society. Today however, as a result of steady improvements in the organization of the penal system, such cases are very rare, if not practically non-existent. ******* In any event, the principle set forth in the new Catechism of the Catholic Church remains valid: 'If bloodless means are sufficient to defend human lives against an aggressor and to protect public order and the safety of persons, public authority must limit itself to such means, because they better correspond to the concrete conditions of the common good and are more in conformity to the dignity of the human person.'" ******* (46) Catechism of the Catholic Church, No. 2266 ******* (47) Cf. ibid ******* from FRONTLINE / WGBH Educational Foundation / www.wgbh.org ************************************************************************************************************************** ******* item 6 WHY I STOPPED ABORTING CHILDREN ******* Tuesday, March 23, 2004 ******* 2004 WorldNetDaily.com ******* by David Brewer, M.D. who committed abortions for 10 years as a military physician in Fortt Rucher, Alabama ******* I can remember the resident doctor sitting down, putting the tube in, and removing the contents. I saw the bloody material coming down the plastic tube, and it went into a big jar. My job afterwards was to go and undo the jar, and to see what was inside. I didn't have any views on abortion; I was in a training program, and this was a brand new experience. I was going to get to see a new procedure and learn. I opened the jar and took the little piece of stockingette stocking and opened that little bag. The resident doctor said, "Now put it on that blue towel and check it out. We want to make sure that we got it all." I thought, 'That'll be exciting hands-on experience looking at tissue.' I opened the sock up and put it on the towel, and there were parts of a person in there. ******* I had taken anatomy, I was a medical student. I knew what I was looking at. There was a little scapula and an arm, I saw some ribs and a chest, and a little tiny head. I saw a piece of a leg, and a tiny hand and an arm and, you know, it was like somebody put a hot poker into me. I had a conscience, and it hurt. Well, I checked it out and there were two arms and two legs and one head and so forth, and I turned and said, "I guess you got it all." That was a very hard experience for me to go through emotionally. ******* Here I was with no real convictions, caught in the middle. And so I did what a lot of us do throughout our life. We don't do anything. I didn't talk with anybody about it, I didn't talk with my folks about it, I didn't think about it. I did nothing. And do you know what happened? I got to see another abortion. That one hurt too. But again I didn't do anything, and so I kept seeing abortions. Do you know what? It hurt a little bit less every time I saw one. ******* Then I got to sit down and do an abortion. Well, the first one that I did was kind of hard. It hurt me again like a hot poker. But after a while, it got to where it didn't hurt. My heart got calloused. I was like a lot of people are today -- afraid to stand up. I was afraid to speak up. Or some of us, maybe we aren't afraid, but we just don't have our own convictions settled yet. ******* One particular abortion changed Brewer's life. ******* I remember an experience as a resident on a hysterotomy (a late-term abortion delivered by caesarean section). I remember seeing the baby move underneath the sack of membranes as the caesarean incision was made, before the doctor broke the water. The thought came to me, "My God, that's a person." Then he broke the water. And when he broke the water, it was like I had a pain in my heart, just like when I saw the first suction abortion. And then he delivered the baby, and I couldn't touch it. I wasn't much of an assistant. I just stood there, and the reality of what was going on finally began to seep into my calloused brain and heart. ******* They took that little baby that was making little sounds and moving and kicking, and set it on the table in a cold, stainless steel bowl. And every time I would look over while we were repairing the incision in the uterus and finishing the Caesarean, I would see that little person kicking and moving in that bowl. And it kicked and moved less and less, of course, as time went on. I can remember going over and looking at that baby when we were done with the surgery and the baby was still alive. You could see the chest was moving and the heart beating, and the baby would try to take a little breath like that, and it really hurt inside, and it began to educate me as to what abortion really was. ********************************************************************************************************************* ******* item 7 WOMEN REGRET THEIR ABORTIONS, USE PAIN TO HELP OTHERS ******* From: [email protected] ******* Date: Wed, 31 Mar 2004 05:12:24 EST ******* by Maria Gallagher, LifeNews.com Staff Writer, March 28, 2004 ******* Harrisburg, PA (LifeNews.com) -- Hazel Braxton wishes she had listened to her mother. After the birth of her third daughter, she found herself unexpectedly pregnant again. ******* "Only one person told me not to have an abortion, and that was my mother," Hazel says, recalling the tragic incident which would shape her life for years to come. ******* "People can say some cruel things when you're not strong enough to fight them off emotionally. The few people I knew fed my insecurity," she said, counseling her to have an abortion. ******* Following the death of her unborn child, Hazel attempted to numb her pain with alcohol, but the grief would not go away. ******* "So one night as I lay aching for my baby, as I did so many nights, asking the Lord to forgive me for what I had done, I had what you may call a vision. I call it a visit from my future grandson. ******* "That night in a half (awake) state I saw a tall, light complexioned, very thin little boy about 12 years old. He did not speak, but oh my, did we communicate. I opened my eyes to peace and forgiveness." ******* Three days later, her third daughter, who was then 17, revealed that she was pregnant. ******* "Well, I told her it was going to be a boy. He would be tall and skinny, light skin. Not the ending but the beginning." ******* Hazel's grandson did not have an easy early life. He was born at 26 weeks -- the age at which some babies are aborted. He ended up spending three months in the neonatal intensive care unit of a hospital. ******* "I visited him almost daily, reading him a spiritual and healing book. It got to the point that he would lift his head when he heard my voice in the NICU," Hazel said. ******* While the little boy did experience some health problems and developmental delays, he managed to survive. He's six now, and Hazel, who grieved for so many years for the child she lost to abortion, is now raising him. ******* Hazel's story is special, but far from uncommon. Across the country, millions of women suffer the after effects of abortion -- the grief, the longing, the guilt over a death which could have been prevented. ******* The pro-life community has long recognized that abortion claims two victims--the child who dies, and the mother who is wounded. In a number of cases, women are coerced into having abortions against their will in order to please a family member or boyfriend. ******* Karen Bodle understands Hazel's pain. The Harrisburg, Pennsylvania resident also lost a child to abortion. At age 18, she learned she was pregnant from her first sexual encounter. ******* "I was a junior in college and was told that dropping out of college to have a child would ruin my life and future career. The only ‘choice’ discussed was abortion. I was ashamed to be pregnant and unmarried, so I thought that abortion would solve my problem," Karen said. ******* "I was told that I could forget about the abortion and go on with my life without any consequences. ‘You don't even have to admit that you were ever pregnant,’ was their advice. I believed the lie that it was just a blob of tissue that could be thrown away. ******* "But I couldn't forget. In dating relationships, the first thing I would reveal was my abortion because I was terrified of being rejected. For years I was ‘pro-abortion’ because I thought I had to justify my own abortion," Karen added. ******* The abortion experience left Karen depressed and confused. She later learned that a 12-week-old unborn baby has a beating heart and fully developed arms and legs. ******* "My baby was not some undefined blob of tissue. If only I had seen a picture of fetal development, I would never have chosen abortion. I felt lied to and deceived," Karen said. ******* Karen is now the Pennsylvania state leader for Operation Outcry: Silent No More, a national movement of women who have been hurt by abortion and who want to see an overturn of Roe v. Wade, the U.S. Supreme Court decision which legalized abortion. ******* "I want America to know that abortion hurts women. Women are created to love and nurture their children, not have them ripped from their wombs and thrown away," Karen said. ******* "There is a disconnect in every woman's heart and mind when she consents to abortion. Although she tries to forget the abortion and suppress the memories, eventually she will face the reality that her own child was mutilated by abortion. My denial lasted 21 years. I wept uncontrollably from the depths of my soul for three days when I finally faced the truth," Karen added. ******* "The weeping released the hidden pain and began a journey of healing that led me to forgiveness. I remember crying out: Where are the women? Where are the women that are willing to speak about the tragedy of abortion? ******* "I did not want more women to go through the intense pain and suffering that I had experienced. I knew that I would have to speak and that my story would encourage other women suffering in silence to come forward and seek emotional healing and forgiveness," Karen said. ******* Hazel and Karen are just two of the thousands of women across the nation who are now willing to go public with their post-abortion pain. It is a pain that public officials and pro-abortion forces may find difficult to ignore in the years ahead. ******* Related web sites: Operation Outcry - Silent No More - http://www.operationoutcry.org Research on post-abortion syndrome - http://www.afterabortion.org ********************************************************************************************************************* ******* item 8 WHY I JOINED THE CHRISTIAN HERITAGE PARTY ******* by Dr. Chris Kempling Psy.D. R.C.C., Quesnel, British Columbia, Canada ******* Early in June of 2004, I decided to join the Conservative Party of Canada. The polls were looking good, the PCs and Alliance had finally managed to pull off a merger, and Stephen Harper appeared able to handle himself well on the national stage as leader of that merger. Furthermore, the local candidate, Dick Harris, was an experienced incumbent. ******* But as the (June 28, 2004)election unfolded, my sense of comfort began to dissolve. It started with Robert Merrifields resignation as family affairs critic, after suggesting that women seeking abortions should have impartial counselling available to them. The social liberal media pounced on him as a wild-eyed reactionary and ardent enemy of womens rights. ******* This situation disturbed me for three reasons. It was no surprise that the SoLibs would attack him what was surprising was that firstly, Merrifield would feel obligated to offer his resignation, and secondly, that Harper would accept it. That the federal leader of the most prominent political social conservative movement would not stand up and defend such an eminently reasonable position made me realize that perhaps the Conservative party was not really the place to park my vote and my allegiance. ******* Thirdly, as the election unfolded, Harper repeatedly stated that his party, if elected to government, would not introduce any legislation to limit access to abortion. In other words, he was prepared to allow the on-going holocaust of more than 100,000 babies per year to continue without lifting a finger, if that position would make him more electable. To take a public position to protect the unborn takes moral courage, and Mr. Harper demonstrated that political opportunism outweighed doing what was right. ******* The last straw for me was when deputy leader Peter Mackay wrote a reference letter for Svend Robinson, to help him escape the full consequences of his grand theft. Providing a character reference to the arch-enemy of social conservatives is hardly appropriate for the second in command of the Conservative Party of Canada, and evidence of poor judgment. ******* As I considered my options, I took a closer look at the Christian Heritage Party. Unabashedly pro-life, fully committed to Biblical principles of honesty, integrity, justice, and good stewardship of taxpayers funds and environmental resources, preserving and strengthening traditional families, elimination of government-sponsored gambling, and most importantly, a pledge to uphold the principle of acknowledging the supremacy of God in all acts of government. ******* Principled, uncompromising, and no waffling on critical moral positions this was a party I could support. ******* So I sent the Conservative Party a letter notifying them of my intention to resign from the party. I also contacted Ron Gray, national leader of the CHP, and over lunch, made plans to start a constituency association in the riding of Cariboo-Prince George. In the next federal election, there will be a Christian Heritage Party candidate in this riding to take a principled position on critical moral issues. ******* It's high time for the faithful to speak boldly, assertively, and with conviction in every riding in the land. ******* Im convinced that the Christian Heritage Party is the best way to achieve principled, God-fearing government. ******************************************************************************************************************** ******* item 9 BRITISH GIRL WHO HAD SECRET ABORTION IS PREGNANT AGAIN, WILL KEEP HER BABY ******* From: "LifeNews.com" ******* Date: Thu, 18 Nov 2004 ******* For news updated throughout the day, visit LifeNews.com. London, England (LifeNews.com) -- A British girl who triggered a national controversy after she had an abortion without her mother's knowledge is pregnant again. But this time, student Melissa Smith intends to keep the baby. Her mother Maureen told the BBC, "She's 15, she made her own mind up. She was hell-bent on replacing the one she lost, basically." Maureen also told the BBC, "Me and my family are supportive 100 percent. We'll be there for her -- like we said previously." Meanwhile, a spokeswoman for the pro-life group known as LIFE, Rachel Heath, said, It is not uncommon for women who have an abortion to become pregnant again soon after. "Many women find the pain of their abortion difficult to bear and go on to have an atonement' baby. This is often by the same father," Heath said. "I hope this time the school health worker leaves (the girl), her boyfriend and family alone to prepare themselves for the birth of their child," Heath added. When I was organizing the debate, it became clear that many of the people that I wanted to participate said there are really no good studies of this, it's all going to be just opinions. ******* Did anything surprise you as you did your interviews? ******* I guess it surprised me how convincing the accounts were. Joseph Nicolosi [of the National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality] agreed to refer, I think, 10 or 20 patients to me. But he insisted on getting a summary of the results before going further. He didn't want to be set up, I guess. But from the very first people that I talked to, I had the feeling they were talking about something real. ******* What stood out for you as something that made the patients convincing? ******* You talk to people and you get a sense of whether they're being candid or not. I had the sense that they were. Also, there was a consistency, the fact that the change was described as slow and not immediate. ******* Some of your critics say that only fundamentalists would even think about taking up reparative therapy. ******* The scene has changed drastically over the last 20 or 30 years. When I started clinical practice in 1961, it was very common to get a male patient who wanted to change. Today those people don't go to psychiatrists because the word is out that the mental health profession doesn't regard it as a problem. ******* How has the study affected your standing among your colleagues? ******* Many colleagues were outraged. I remember when it first appeared in the media, I got a letter from, I think, a dean of admissions at Columbia. He wrote me that it was just a disgrace that a Columbia professor should do such a thing. Within the gay community, there was initially tremendous anger and feeling that I had betrayed them. I think that has largely dissipated. But also, I'm at the point in my career that I don't worry about such things. ******* Have you considered conducting a follow-up study? ******* No. I feel a little battle fatigue. But also I'm not sure what the study would be. Some people have said, "Follow these people, interview them five years later, see how many of them have switched back," since it's well known that some ex-gays give it up. ******* But suppose you found that 5 percent or 10 percent did switch back. I mean, so what? You'd find the same thing if you followed people who had treatment for drug addiction. Some are going to relapse. ******* The study that ought to be done is a controlled study where people go into the therapy, and then you initially evaluate them, and then you evaluate them later and see how many actually changed. But that study is not going to be done, unfortunately. ******* Is that because of a lack of interest or funding? ******* The reasons are, number one, reparative therapists are not scientiststhey don't do studies. The second reason is, if somebody proposed that the National Institute of Mental Health do such a study, I think almost certainly any gays in the study section would say this is a total waste of time: They would say "We already know it's hokum, so why do it?". ******* You've said very clearly that no one should be coerced into reparative therapy. ******* I think the politically correct term now is reorientation therapy. Reparative already implies something's brokenof course the reparative therapists believe this, but it kind of infuriates the gays to even call it reparative therapy. ******* Copyright 2005 Christianity Today. She was seven weeks pregnant, but she feared for the life of her baby not because there was anything wrong with the pregnancy, but because, two days earlier, she had taken RU-486 at an abortion mill. Now, she had changed her mind about having the abortion and wanted to see if the baby could be saved! ******* The RU-486 process requires taking the drug itself (called mifiprex) at the abortion mill, and then taking a second drug (called cytotec or misoprostol) three days later on ones own. Ashley had taken the mifiprex, but had not yet taken the cytotec. Now in a small percentage of cases, the RU-486 will not kill the baby by itself. Its normal function, however, is to starve the unborn child by interfering with the working of progesterone. The RU-486 goes to the cells that receive the progesterone and block them, so that the real progesterone cannot do its work. This would be analogous to putting a counterfeit key into a keyhole so that it fits but cannot turn the lock to open the door. Meanwhile, the real key cannot go in. The cytotec, then, will induce contractions so that a dead baby is delivered. ******* Dr. Harrison had not faced such a situation before. Ashley told him that her boyfriend had pushed for the abortion. But after she took the RU-486, Ashley thought to herself, O My God, what have I done? She told her mother what had happened, and her mom called a local pregnancy center. The center then referred her to Dr. Harrison. ******* The doctor excused himself, went into another room, and prayed. He consulted a number of medical resources, and decided to give Ashley a progesterone treatment. With an extra dose of progesterone, he thought, maybe the effects of the counterfeit progesterone could be overcome. It was worth a try. This was not, however, without its risks, about which he clearly informed Ashley. He told her, first of all, that this effort might not work, and her baby might die anyway. He also told her that this effort might prolong the death process, or might bring additional complications to her or her child, or might even kill her. Ashley was courageous, and signed the consent form saying, Whatever happens is in Gods hands I just pray that my baby will be OK. ******* She took the shot, and she began bleeding that weekend. But then the bleeding stopped, and with continued progesterone treatment by Dr. Harrison, the pregnancy continued normally. Dr. Daniel L. Holland, who is Dr. Harrisons partner, delivered a healthy baby girl named Kaylie a survivor of an attempted RU-486 abortion! ******* Its easy to think its too late! But where theres life, theres hope! ********************************************************************************************************* www.citizenlink.org Citizen Link www.ChangeIsPossible.org.uk Change Is Possible (UK ex-gay organization)
