******* item 1 CATHOLIC BISHOPS IN MALTA UPSET UNITED NATIONS PUSHING ABORTION THERE
******* From: "LifeNews.com"
******* Date: Thu, 2 Dec 2004
******* Floriana, Malta (LifeNews.com) -- Catholic leaders on the island nation of Malta are upset that the United Nations is pushing the pro-life country to overturn its pro-life laws prohibiting abortion. Maltese bishops criticized a document released by a UN committee urging the nation to consider allowing abortions in cases of rape or incest or to protect the health of the mother. In a statement, the bishops called the recommendation "objectionable" and "unacceptable" and urged Malta residents to continue protecting the right to life of unborn children from conception. "Abortion is and remains the murder of innocent persons, whatever the reason behind it," the bishops said, according to a report by Malta news agency di-ve. "Abortion is fully contrary to the law of God. It is a grave affront to God, who has absolute authority over human life." The United Nations Human Rights Committee placed Malta and other pro-life nations on a "hit list" of countries that would be subjected to intense lobbying to alter their abortion statutes. Ironically, Malta has a representative on this UN committee.

******* Hello All: This is what God can do in a nation when believers will humble themselves and pray.

******* From: Arthur Doerksen [mailto:[email protected]]
******* On February 3, 2005 President Yushenko listed his agenda for Ukraine, in which he took a clear and unprecedented stand against corruption. Sunday Adelaja, pastor of the Embassy of the Blessed Kingdom of God for All Nations, Europe's largest church in Kyiv, wrote an encouraging report about recent developments in Ukraine:
******* For the first time in the history of Ukraine, the President invited the entire country to join him for a second public Inauguration and Oath of Office on Independence Square. Following the Inauguration on Sunday, January 23, he started his first working day with public prayer and blessing. He invited the heads of all Ukrainian Christian denominations to join him. "This is a totally new thing for our nation," says Adelaja. "Remember, Ukraine is a former communist society."
******* Yushenko then chose Yulia Timoshenko, a woman, as Prime Minister. "She is not simply the most popular politician in Parliament," says Adelaja, "she is a born-again, Spirit-filled believer."
******* The most interesting event took place when the Prime Minister took her Oath of Office on February 3, 2005 as President Yushenko listed his agenda for the country. What shocked the whole country was the fact that he took a clear and unprecedented stand against corruption. He said:
******* a) My government will NOT STEAL! I know it is a fantasy in Ukraine to hear this, but I assure you that this government will not steal anything from
the public. I take full responsibility for my government's actions.
******* b) My government will never give or receive bribes! I demand this standard from every member of this government and I say right now, that if anyone is caught giving or taking a bribe, he will suffer the full penalty of the law. I also would like to say that if you catch any member of this
government in bribery or theft, it is your responsibility, as citizens, to please report the situation to me, that I might take immediate action.
******* c) To the Parliament, I want you to know that we will never use money to shift lobby votes! That practice has ended, as of today! I demand that the
principle of openness, transparency and uprightness filter throughout every department and cabinet. No decision should be taken in secret. Everything must be done openly and in public view.
******* Then the Prime Minister came to the stand, and made one simple point: "Our government has come to the conclusion that Ukraine can never rise on her feet until she bows down her knees before the Almighty God." Adelaja: "This takes us back to the Monday morning when the President started his work. After the prayer and blessing, he took his wife and children a few steps closer to the altar, and they bowed down on their knees, bringing the nation before the Lord. This is an unprecedented act in this part of the world and all the media and priests could do was stand in awe, and shock at what was happening."
******* The biggest surprise to the Parliament was when the Prime Minister presented her 6-point program to the people. Everyone expected figures and calculations, but instead received a biblical concept of national transformation:
******* a) Faith (in God, nation and individual citizens)
******* b) Justice (to build an upright society)
******* c) Harmony (between citizens and leaders)
******* d) Security (of individual people, national interests and properties)
******* e) Life (abundant life in every sphere through social programs)
******* f) World Relations (that Ukraine would integrate itself as a European nation cultivating good relations with other countries including Russia and
the European Union)
******* After Yulia Timoshenko's program was announced, the Ministers were named. "We as believers couldn't help but laugh at this point," says Adelaja, "because of who was placed at the head of the SBU (Ukrainian KGB): Alexander Turshinov. This man, a believer, grew up in a Baptist family during the communist regime. The top assignment of the KGB at that time was to destroy religion and faith, Baptists and Evangelicals in particular. Now, the head of this dreaded organization is a man who believes in the very thing they tried to destroy. Yes, God has a sense of humor! The Bible says in Psalm 2:4, "He that sits in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision."
******* Other new ministerial appointments of interest to Christians are the positions held by the Minister of Culture: a born-again Catholic lady; and the Personal Advisor to the President: Leonid Chernovetskiy (a member of Adelaja's church). "Everyone can testify that the new governmental appointments are people of high integrity," says Adelajah.
******* Some of the very first bills passed by the cabinet were designed to return stolen properties back to the citizens and the country. "We know that the changes taking place here in Ukraine are born from above," says Adelajah, "and they are proving to be both encouraging and highly delightful!
******* May you rejoice with us as we keep believing God for total transformation. Nothing is impossible for the Lord!"

******* item 3 PREACHING AGAINST HOMOSEXUALITY LANDS SWEDISH PASTOR IN PRISON FOR A MONTH
******* From: "Mission America"
******* STOCKHOLM, July 5, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Ake Green, the pastor of a Swedish Pentecostal church in Kalmar, Sweden, has been sentenced to one month in prison by a Swedish court, for inciting hatred against homosexuals. Green was prosecuted in January for "hate speech against homosexuals" for a sermon he preached last summer citing Biblical references to homosexuality.
******* Sweden passed an equivalent to Canada's Bill C-250 last year -- a "hate crimes" law that forbids criticism of homosexuality. In a WorldNetDaily article, the author quotes from the church newspaper Kyrkans Tidning, in which the prosecutor in the case, Kjell Yngvesson, justifies the
arrest of pastor Green: "One may have whatever religion one wishes, but this is an attack on all fronts against homosexuals. Collecting Bible cites on this topic as he (Pastor Green) does makes this hate speech."

******* item 4 THE FRENCH GET IT RIGHT ON MARRIAGE AND THE FAMILY - Sharon Slater, President, United Families International www.UnitedFamilies.org
******* February 22, 2006
******* A recent French government commission examining possible changes in law necessary to protect children and accommodate changes to the family in France has recommended against legalizing same-sex "marriage", permitting same-sex adoption or allowing "medically-assisted procreation"? for same-sex couples.
******* Their report, the Parliamentary Report on the Family and the Rights of Children, released in late January, eloquently stressed that "Marriage is not merely the contractual recognition of the love between a couple; it is a framework that imposes rights and duties, and that is designed to provide for the care and harmonious development of the child."?
******* The commission examined in detail the impacts of legalized same-sex "marriage", traveling to the Netherlands, Belgium, Canada and Spain, the four countries where it is legal, as well as to countries with liberal “civil union? laws. It also sponsored extensive discussions inside France, listening to all points of view.
******* In the end, the commission was persuaded when it "considered the consequences for the child's development and the construction of his or her identity of creating a fictitious filiation by law "two fathers, or two mothers" which is biologically neither real nor plausible. Diametrically opposed representations were made by the people heard on this point, and they failed to persuade a majority of the Mission (commission) to support recognizing a right to a child or a right to marriage, for same-sex couples."?
******* I must confess to being somewhat surprised by these recommendations, not because of the conclusions reached, but because they are being made by an official French government body. In our dealings with the French delegation in our work at the United Nations, they typically negotiate in a block with the countries of the European Union and are usually opposed to our positions on family issues. It will be interesting to see if and how the commission's findings influence future French positions in international forums.
******* The fact that the commission did make these recommendations is certainly a testament to the integrity of the process they employed. Marriage IS primarily about children and the social science data IS overwhelming that children fare best by far when they are raised by their married biological parents. Anyone who puts aside politically correct concerns and does an honest evaluation of what is best for children, and therefore best for society, will reach exactly the same conclusions as this commission.
******* These findings by this French commission are another important piece of the intellectual and psychological bulwark under construction to protect marriage and the family around the world. Other elements include the legislation passed by Australia last year to prohibit same-sex "marriage",? the recent elevation of the Conservative Party to power in Canada at least in part on a promise to re-examine that country's action to legalize same-sex "marriage", the UN recognition of the Doha Declaration reiterating the commitment to marriage and the family found in the basic documents of the United Nations, the resistance of Poland, Lativia and other eastern European countries to outside pressure to legalize marriage and grant other supposed "gay rights", and, of course, the message being sent to the world by the individual states in the United States which are adopting marriage constitutional amendments.
******* Just as we must not forget how critical our efforts to defend marriage and the family actually are, we must also not forget the strength of the case we can make in their defense.
******* Thanks to the French for giving us more tools to win the battle!!

******* item 5 IRELAND HIGH COURT RULES AGAINST GAY "MARRIAGE" CITING HARM TO CHILDREN - ?Refuses Recognition of Lesbian "Marriage" Staged in Canada - By Gudrun Schultz
******* From: Robert A. Jason
******* Sent: Saturday, December 16, 2006
******* DUBLIN, Ireland, December 15, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The Ireland High Court yesterday rejected a lesbian couple's demand to have their Canadian "marriage" recognized in Ireland, in a landmark ruling closely watched by both sides of the international marriage debate.?******* Justice Elizabeth Dunne decided against the claim of Dr. Katherine Zappone and Dr. Anne Louise Gilligan, who had argued that the State and the Revenue Commissioners had violated their constitutional rights by refusing to assess them for taxes as a married couple, the Irish Times reported yesterday. ?******* "Marriage was understood under the 1937 Constitution to be confined to persons of the opposite sex," Justice Dunne wrote in her lengthy ruling. ?******* "Having regard to the clear understanding of the meaning of marriage as set out in the numerous authorities opened to the Court from this jurisdiction and elsewhere, I do not see how marriage can be redefined by the Court to encompass same sex marriage."?******* Dr. Zappone, a public policy research consultant member of the Human Rights Commission, and Dr. Gilligan, who lectures at St. Patrick's College in Dublin, are homosexual activists who have been pursuing a change in Ireland's marriage laws that would permit homosexual couples to legally marry. ?******* When Canada passed homosexual marriage legislation in 2003, the pair traveled to Vancouver, B.C. in September 2003 to 'marry', and then used their Canadian 'marriage' to attempt to force recognition by the Irish government.?******* Justice Dunne rejected the couple's argument that international acceptance of homosexual 'marriage' was reason enough for re-evaluation of Irish law.?******* "The Plaintiffs referred frequently in the course of this case to the 'changing consensus' but I have to say the there is little evidence of that," she wrote. "The consensus around the world does not support a widespread move towards same sex marriage. There has been some limited support for the concept of same sex marriage as in Canada, Massachusetts and South Africa together withthree European countriesbut, in truth, it is difficult to see that as a consensus, changing or otherwise."?******* In her 138-page ruling, Justice Dunne expressed concern about the effect of same-sex marriage on children, saying the lack of conclusive research into the results of homosexual parenting made it necessary to reserve judgment on the issue.?******* "[T]here is simply not enough evidence from the research done to date that could allow firm conclusions to be drawn as to the consequences of same sex marriage particularly in the area of the welfare of children."?******* The United States-based Institute for Marriage and Public Policy commented on the Irish court decision, saying:?******* 'Of particular interest may be the court's discussion about the evidence purporting to show no difference between children raised by same-sex couples and those raised by married couples. The judge accepted testimony about the methodological shortcomings of available evidence and said: "It also seems to me having regard to the criticism of the methodology used in the majority of the studies conducted to date that until such time as there are more longitudinal studies involving much larger samples that it will be difficult to reach firm conclusions on this topic."' ?******* 'The court concluded that the Irish Constitution's explicit reference to a constitutional right of opposite-sex couples to marry justified the legal distinction between same- and opposite-sex couples in the marriage law. The court further noted, however, that the marriage law was further justified by concerns with the 'welfare of children' since in the absence of good research, 'the State is entitled to adopt a cautious approach to changing the capacity to marry.'"?******* Justice Dunne said the decision to grant legal recognition to same-sex couples apart from marriage should be up to the legislature, not the courts. ?******* Currently in Ireland, legislation has been proposed that would permit homosexual couples to enter in to civil unions with some of the legal benefits given to married heterosexual couples.?******* Read the full Ireland High Court decision here:?http://www.kalcase.org/KAL%20Zappone_v_Rev_Commrs_Judgement.doc

******* item 6 AUSTRIAN BISHOP LUGNER SAYS MALL OWNER EXCOMMUNICATED FOR PROVIDNING SPACE FOR ABORTION CLINIC By John-Henry Westen
******* from "LifeSiteNews"
******* Cardinal Schnborn responds, "The destruction of life must not be made banal and viewed like a shopping trip."?******* VIENNA, Austria, February 6, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Salzburg Auxiliary Bishop Andreas Laun has caused a stir in the German press by saying publicly that a Catholic businessman who rented space in his shopping mall to an abortion clinic has excommunicated himself. The businessman, Richard Lugner, at first threatened to sue Bishop Laun but has since thought better of the lawsuit but has not reconsidered his aiding and abetting the killing of unborn children.
******* In an interview with the Catholic News Agency Austria (http://www.kath.net ), Bishop Laun was asked if Lugner's action constituted an automatic excommunication (latae sententiae). Bishop Laun replied, "Certainly. The catechism says: 'The formal cooperation in an abortion is a grave delict. The Church punishes this violation with the penalty of excommunication.' Because Lugner cooperates in abortions, by letting them happen in his shopping mall, the norm applies to him and he is excommunicated. ?******* Scandal broke when Erich Leitenberger, the press secretary of Cardinal Christoph Schnborn, came to Lugner's defence. Leitenberher, also the editor-in-chief of the Catholic Press Agency in Germany 'Kathpress', disparaged the work of kath.net and Bishop Laun saying, "Academic discussions about excommunication will not help to save the right to life of even one child."?******* The scandal was quickly put to an end however when Cardinal Schnborn commented to the largest paper in Austria on the matter. Backing Auxiliary Bishop Laun, the Cardinal said, "The destruction of life must not be made banal and viewed like a shopping trip. It must not be that a society is viewed as a way out. Everything you need to know about abortion is to be found in the Fifth Commandment." In an interview with Kath.net, Cardinal Schnborn said that he had asked Lugner to not sign a contract with the abortion clinic. He added that he was pleased with the discussion the controversy had caused.?******* News tip and translation courtesy of Gerald Augustinus of http://closedcafeteria.blogspot.com
