Before you travel
Take a back up of your phone data, including contact phone numbers and memos. Write down your SIM card number, phone IMEI number and international contact number to report lost phones. Make sure your international roaming is activated for the country you are travelling. Find out the call prices and services in your destination country before arriving and choose the best carrier for you when arriving. Consider changing your voice mail greeting, but remember you do not want to give too much details about when you are away. Thieves know how to take advantage of the situation.
Travelling
Do not use your phone in airplanes, mobile phones do cause airplane instruments to malfunction. You can only use your phone if you have a phone with "flight-safe" feature and if the airlines allow you to use it. Some railway companies have mobile-phone-free cars, respect those bans. Even some taxis have banned the use of mobile phones.
Pay attention to the traffic when walking on the street. A lot of fatal accidents happen because pedestrians are talking on their phones or sending text messages. Just play it safe.
After returning
When you are back home check if your friends got your multi-media or text messages. Messages are often lost and it is worth checking it for the next trip. Check also your phone bill when it arrives
