Chapter 13
Kissing her with a fiery need, he had claimed her in one bold stroke, piercing through her like the lightning that cracked the heavens above. In anger, in unreasonable action, he had taken what was so innocent and pure and turned it into an act of unwilling compromise. In blind jealousy and burning need to make her his, he had not realized that he had hurt someone in the process.
Tangled in the sheets, he listened to the heavy rain tapping on the wooden roof that nearly silenced Jiranan's breathing. He rolled on his side and stared at her, but her back was turned to him. She had acted like a woman of the world, but when he touched her, she shied away like a virgin. That was because she was a virgin.
Sighing in the oddity of it, he reached out to touch her arm. She did not respond and he knew she had fallen asleep. Exhausted and tired from the struggle and his ferocious need, Andrew was glad that she hadn't fainted or cried to sleep. She just accepted it and when it was over, she closed her eyes and willed herself to sleep.
Andrew sat up, leaning against the headboard and stared at her sleeping form. Guilt and shame grew the same time his heart realized how much he had wanted her. But was this the right way to show her? Part frustration in the sight of Jiranan in another man's arm, he thought he would lose her just as he had lost Yui, he had done what he shouldn't.
Glancing around the room, he took in the sight of her private world. So this was her room, he speculated. Unlike the woman, the room was traditional and nearly bare with white lace and linen over wood and few glass vases. At the end of the bed, there was a dresser. To one side of the room, there was a small table with few accessories that were neatly in order. On the opposite side was a large mirror painted in gold that looked almost brown now contrasting against the oddly greenish tinted glass.
Andrew had seen the glass before. In curiosity, he found himself walking to the mirror. The carvings along the frame were all too familiar and too real for him to mistaken. He had seen this mirror in his dream before. This very room. Staring into the depths of the mirror, he could see his reflection and Jiranan's body on the bed. But then, in the darkness of the room, the mirror seemed to cloud. Shocked, Andrew stepped back and the mist in the mirror parted and another woman was in the mirror.
Yui! Touching the mirror, he thought he was hallucinating. Was it not a mirror? Walking around to make sure that there was not a plug to cause this strange hallucination, he turned on a nearby lamp and went behind the mirror and found the oddest writings carved into it.
At that same moment, Yui had awoken and stared out of the mirror to see her body lying on the bed of tangled sheets and tossed clothes. Andy was nowhere to be found. Quietly, she stepped out of the mirror, crossing the room to sit on the side of the bed. No one could say that they ever saw themselves in this way. Yui stared at her body and almost cried.
"I wanted to be beautiful and confident." Sniffing the tears, Yui ran her hand over Jiranan's cheek. "But I didn't want to be ruined in the process. How many problems did you cause? And what am I supposed to do? How could Andy do this to me? False promises. False words. So you were the one Andy always talked about. And this is the man who kissed you without knowing that it is me."
How sad that in a matter of a few seconds, Andy would not have Jiranan again. Only Yui.
"I will never leave Ayuttaya again. And I won't ever love anyone again."
A lightning flashed far off in the horizon. Several seconds later, a thunder rumbled low and Yui felt her body grow tense and weak. Curling her fingers to test the physical nature of her body, she almost winced in the pool of fatigue and wasted energy. Stretching out, she turned on her back and stared at the ceiling. Tears came down her temple and dampened her hair, still slick from the lovemaking.
"Why did you do that, Andy?" She mumbled to herself.
"Yui?" Andrew stepped out from behind the mirror and Yui gasped, pulling the sheet over her bare body as she sat up to stare at him. "It is you." He had seen it the whole time, from the time she had walked out of the mirror to the time she slipped back into her body. Everything became too surreal but for him, these things had become a part of his life.
"Andy...." Yui turned away and the tears swept down onto the sheet. "What are you still doing here? I thought you left."
"If I left, I wouldn't have seen what happened or have known that I've been fooled." Crossing towards the bed, he sat on his knees and stared at her. "Yui...Jiranan. One and the same person. I should have known. Why didn't you tell me?"
"Would you believe?"
"After having your spirit float around my workshop, you'd question that?"
"You thought I was just a spirit of your creation. And besides, how was I to know that you were also seeing Jiranan?" Two-timer, she thought.
He caught the anger in her voice and lifted her face to look at him. "You made a wish to be someone you were not. Do you know how dangerous that was? What if you were never able to return to your body? Would you be trapped in between two worlds forever?"
Yui looked away. "What do you know about the mirror or my life?"
"Maybe not your life. But this mirror was made from my ancestor." Leaning back to sit, he watched her eyes look up at him with surprise. "You remember when I said that I had powers to create anything, well, my ancestor happened to make this mirror as well. I don't know how your family obtained it, but I do know that whoever uses it always have an unfortunate fate. You'd be trapped between reality and fantasy. And I would never see you again. Then what would I do? What would I do without you, Yui?"
