1/350 scale Academy Minicraft model.
This shows my custom installation of small neon lights on the boat deck. All decks were lit with approximately 100 neon lights for the upper decks and 8 larger incandescent lights for the hull. The entire system runs from a wall outlet.
Here is A-deck with a close-up of the wiring.
Here you can see the hull lights, as well as the boat deck and A-deck
setups. The foil in the bottom of the hull helps the brightness level, and
the foam around the edges help to diffuse the light evenly across the entire
hull.
Several hundred portholes were drilled out in order for this
setup to work. Unfortunately, I do not currently have any decent pictures
of the ship when the lights are on.
Nice overall views of the finished product.
It took me two years to build this model, but I am a slow worker and also tend to procrastinate! However, I would estimate several hundred hours building time.
One of the
more difficult tasks was getting all the rigging and funnel stays set up.
The rigging is thread and the funnel stays are very thin copper wires.
Neither of these were original kit materials.
This is a very good view to look at all 48 of the funnel stays.
These thin copper wires looped back and forth. There is only 1 strand of
wire per funnel. Note the extension cord trailing at the right.
