| Title: Telling Time on the Clock
Grade level: 2nd Objectives: ~ Students will be able to identify the increments of five on the clock ~ Students will be able to explain elapsed time of the clock ~ Students will be able to define quarter to and quarter after on the clock Core Curriculum: ~ 2.M.9 Tell time to the half hour and five minutes using both digital and analog clocks Pre-Assessment: ~ Students will be tested one week before the teaching of the lesson on their knowledge of the subject. ~ Students will have to complete a worksheet with questions based on the lessons objectives. ~ Handout will be attached. Post- Assessment: ~Student will be tested one week after the teaching of the lesson to test their understanding of what was taught. ~ Students will receive the same sheet as the pre-assessment. Materials: ~ Construction paper for each student ~ Scissors ~ Markers ~ Brads ~ Clock hands ~ Clock already made for teacher to show and use Procedure: 1. Students will then get pieces of construction paper, markers, and a brad, clock hands and scissors. 2. Students will put together a clock so they are able to hold the clock during the lesson. 3. Teacher will begin with having the students count by fives. (Ask who can could to fives, have them stop at 60. Explain why you had them stop at 60, because thats how many minutes are in an hour) 4. Teacher will then talk about how on the clock the numbers represent increment of five (Give examples, and have students could with you while counting to 60 also have student count with you and have them put the slashes to represent 1-4 minutes on the clock) a. 3:05, 3:10, 3:15, 3:20, 3:25, 3:30, 3:35, 3:40, 3:45, 3:50, 3:55 and 4:00 5. Teacher will then talk about time elapse (ask students if they know what that word means, if not explain to them. Give real life examples and have students count with you.) a. Start on 6:15 and move to 6:45 (how much time went by) b. Start on 7:10 and move to 8:55 (how much time went by) 6. Teacher will then talk about quarter to and quarter after the hour. Explain that the clock is broken up by 15 and that explains quarter. a. 2:45 means quarter to the next hour (15 minutes to the next hour) b. 11:15 means quarter after the hour (15 minutes has gone by in the hour) c. Students can make up their own times and share with a friend or the whole class. Modifications: ~ Students can work with a partner while trying to come up with examples. ~ One student needs to be in his seat the whole time during lesson Extensions: ~ Follow up lesson students play clock bingo with a partner ~ Have students practice more with clocks with a clock worksheet. |
