Algebra Lesson
Objectives:
~ Students will be able to identify and match the next objects in the patterns
~ Students will be able to construct their own patterns
~ Students will be able to recognize changes in patterns in different formats
Rationale:
~ ~ Students need to understand order of patterns and what object will come next in that pattern.
    Examples:
         - Being able to see patterns in different forms and on objects in everyday lives. (Wallpaper, street lights, tiles etc)
         - Being able to complete unique patterns to solve a puzzle
Core Curriculum:
~ 2.A.2 Describe and extend increasing or decreasing (+,-) sequences and patterns (numbers or objects to 100)
Materials:
- Paper                      - Worksheet with different patterns                     - Colored Pencils
- Any type of objects to make patterns (wall paper, different tiles, blocks, triangles, circles etc.
- Markers                   - Crayons
Procedure:
1. Teacher will talk to students about patterns and how they are formed.  (Questions: What makes up a pattern? Can patterns be formed in any way? What type of items can be in a pattern? Ask where you see pattenrs?)
~ Talk about patterns that you see at a restaurant, on wall paper, patterns on signs and on chairs etc.
~ Have student come up with some place where they have seen patterns
2. Teacher will show students some patterns using blocks, money, triangles etc.  Have students see if they see a pattern.
3. Teacher will talk about how patterns can be different. Different shapes, different colors, different objects.  Talk about how you can write out the patterns to see what is coming next.
4. Teacher will then give some patterns that involve different forms.
     Examples:
~ Clap, clap, snap, hop, hop, jump
~ Tirangle, circle, block, sea shell, shark tooth, star fish
~ Teacher can talk about dances, and how they have patterns and incorporate music to the lesson
5. Teacher will then give students a worksheet that has a bunch of different patterns on it.  Students can work in-groups of two to work on worksheets
6. Students then will be given a sheet of paper where they can use anything to create their own pattern that can be shared with the rest of the class.
7. After students share their ideas and patterns as a class create a pattern book that each student can take home and ahve their parents try and guess.
8. Students will have to provide an answer sheet to show what comes next in their patterns.
Directions:
(for making the book)
Students will have to make a pattern, it can be anything that is in the classroom or they can draw or cut out pictures.  Students will then show a teacher their pattern to make sure it is correct.  Once they get an okay from the teacher, students will then place their patterns on a piece of paper.  Once students have completed their pattern teacher will collect them and place them in a book for students to take home so their parents can try them out.
Assessment:
~ Teacher wil be walking around to assess students as they work on the worksheet and their patterns that they make up on their own.
       - Being able to ask them questions on how they came up with the patterns they did
       - Looking at their patterns.
~ Teacher will also collect the worksheets to evaluate how each studetn did with the patterns provided
       - This allows for the teacher to check students understanding of how the patterns were completed
       - Teacher can use this information to assess students and help those who might need extra help.
~ Teacher will also check at the end of the lesson the patterns that each student makes up to put in book for students to take home
       - This allows for the teacher to assess student on an individual basis.
       - Helps teacher understand the level of difficulty eachj student provided with their patterns
