The Fungi Fun Project was designed by Kathleen Diamond and Kelli Ramer of SHIP and NYSSD, respectively. SHIP is located in suburban Bergen County, in northern New Jersey. NYSSD is located in Rome, New York - about five or so hours from SHIP. The two teachers met at science workshops for teachers of the deaf in Rochester and decided to create a collaborative project that focused on science content and communication skills for their deaf and hard of hearing students. The Fungi Fun Project was born.
Implemented in the spring of 1998, The Fungi Fun Project was a success. Students in both classes were required to create their own original investigation (with guidance from Diamond and Ramer) about bread mold. They were to devise a hypothesis, list materials, and design a scientific experiment to test that hypothesis. SHIP students were then required to communicate their findings to their partners at NYSSD, and vice versa. Partners were to duplicate the experiment and either support or disprove the original hypothesis.
Communication between schools was easy - Yahoo! Mail, Yahoo! Groups, and the ICQ program were utilized. Lab reports and pictures were sent via ICQ as well as uploaded to the project web site, maintained by Diamond at SHIP.
If you and your students are interested in participating in a future Fungi Fun Project, please feel free to email the Fungi Fun Project coordinators.
