Chapter 3
"So what are you gonna do for your project?"  I asked trying to show I had no hard feelings.  I'm not the kind of person to carry a grudge and I knew he was sorry.
"Is that bruise from yesterday?"  He asked examining the dark patches of skin on my arm.  I didn't even know how to answer it.
"Uh...yeah."  I finally let it out.
"I'm such an asshole."  He said looking at my battered arm.  I shoud've hated him, the jerk that wrecked my car which made my dad hit me.  But for some reason all I could do was sit there and smile like an idiot whenever he talked to me.
"How did your parents handle it?"  He asked sympathetically.  I knew he would never understand me.  His
mommy and daddy probably just ran out and bought him a new car.  My mind flashed back to the incident the night before.  And then, to the one I always tried to forget...

"Shut up bitch.  I don't need your shit.  I'll go to the bar whenever I feel like it!"  My father said          punching my mom across the face.  I peeked out     from the hallway.  My mom was crying and I            couldn't help but cry too.  I saw my mom                  glancing over the the coat closet.  "What?  You gonna shoot me?  Yeah go ahead and shoot me.  But then who's gonna feed those damned kids'a yours? Huh? You?"  He said poking her farther into the couch.  She got up and raced to the closet grabbing the gun in her hand.  I wanted her to end his life so badly.  Her hand began shaking violently, pointing the loaded gun at my dad's head.  Tears streamed  down her battered face.  In an instant, her hand         readjusted the direction of the gun, and she               pulled the trigger...my life changed forever.

I shook the thoughts out of my head and fluttered the tears from my watering eyes.  I looked over and found Shane staring at me in confusion.
"Oh, my dad handled it ok."  I lied smiling and returning my focus to my notebook.
"Maggie, do you want to go do something with me and a few of my friends tonight?"  He asked smiling at me.  I didn't understand how all of a sudden this guy I had never talked to, suddenly found me acceptable to hang out with.
"I have to work."  I said sincerely.
"Well what about tomorrow?"  He persisted.  I bit my bottom lip in concentration.
"Um...well...sure...I guess."  The bell suddenly sang through the classroom.
"Great I guess I'll see you tomorrow then."
