Dear Ms. Leslie; I am just curious, what does a person have to go through to have a sex change? Curious in Cleveland
A
Dear curious: There are a lot of things that one has to consider when thinking of going through such a drastic life changing procedure. First and "I belive the most important" is Why do you think you want to have a sex change? The ONLY reason to consider gender re-assignment is if you are one gender and feel deeply inside that you are the opposite gender trapped within the wrong body. If this is the case then the first thing you need to do, is to get into counseling with a qualified therapist that specializes in this issue. During counseing you should consider having electrolysis is applicable before living full time in the desired gender. It can be very akward to live full time as a female while completing electrolysis. You will have to live full time in the desired gender before being considered for surgery. During this time your Doctor may elect to start you on hormone therapy. If you successfuly live a minimum of one year in the desired gender, your Doctor will at their discretion recomend you for surgery. There is more to it than space and time allow on this web site. If you have any more questions feel free to e-mail me @ [email protected]

Hi Leslie: I feel like I am a man trapped in a womans body and I know that surgery is available, but I am afraid of loosing my job, and my friends. Any suggestions??? Signed Trapped in Dayton

Well Trapped, I do have an answer for you, although you may not like it. First, YOU and ONLY YOU can decide if transitioning is the right decision for you. I am not going to sugar coat this or lie to you. There is a very good possibility tht you could loose your job, friends, and even family. The choice you have to make is, are you going to live your life for YOU or for every-one else. I am not saying either is the right or wrong choice, that responsibility belongs to you.
