Bad Channels

Killer Music.  Alien Airwaves.

Some men like to put women on a pedestal.  Others like to put them in the kitchen.  the new DJ at KDUL likes to put them in jars; he's a collector of babes and he shirnks them down to carry them home.  Only home isn't exactly next door... it's another planet.

Now, the real DJ at KDUL is Dangerous Dan O'Dare (PAUL HIPP), an eccentric egomaniac who loves doing off-the-wall pranks while on the air.  The latest butt of his jokes is Lisa Cummings (MARTHA QUINN), a local reporter who thinks she's spotted a UFO.  (Yeah, right!) But the joke's on Dan when Cosmo, the alien, breaks into the radio station and takes a stab at show-biz.  It seems that's the way to get the chicks.  Now Dangerous Dan's reputation is at stake.  The battle for the airwaves has begun...

Liner Notes

Finding the bands and music for BAD CHANNELS was one of those "fun" challenges.  The idea of a film taking place in a rock radio station with aliens zapping beautiful babes through rock videos is a Music Supervisor's dream.

First comes the score and main titles theme.  Since the main location used for BAD CHANNELS is a rock radio station, I felt that the score, video and source music had to be guitar driven.  Blue Oyster Cult came to mind both for the score and feature songs.  They have had a tremendously successful career and are certainly known to be a guitar band.  Although they had never done a score for a film, their sense of melody and obsession with science and science fiction made them prime candidates.  We got what we expected in the end, the band gave us layers and layers of keyboards and their signature scorching guitars.  The instruments, musicianship and the Blue Oyster Cult ultra-high tech studio techniques bland into an exciting and unique score.

Director Ted Nicolaou and producer Charlie Band asked for visually exciting, unusual and, of course, talented groups for the video segments of the film.

Two local L.A. groups came to mind immediately: Fair Game and Sykotik Sinfoney.  Fair Game lead singer Ron Kell has an international reputation as a great vocalist, put four beautiful female musicians behind him and Fair Game meets the standards for Bad Channels.  Sykotik Sinfoney, ouor next choice took Ted Nicoloau about 3 seconds to approve.  The costumes and the quirky music fit BAD CHANNELS perfectly.   Our last band, DMT, came to us through Blue Oyster Cult's management.  DMT has that anger and fury that we raely hear or see - they were recruited on their demo tape alone - we never saw them in person until we shot their video.  I feel very fortunate to have worked with these bands, I feel that they all have tremendous potential and expect to see them do big things in the future.

We enjoyed filming BAD CHANNELS, creating the music and finally making this CD.  I know you'll enjoy it too.
