It has historically been considered important to conduct ritual at the appropriate time, on the appropriate day for best results. This is based upon the Planetary Correspondences which assign a planetary ruler to each day of the week and each hour of the day. (See Planetary Correspondences) There are two basic methods for determining the correct time for ritual, the Traditional and Alternate Methods. The Traditional Method is the ancient one, where the hours are counted from sunrise and sunset. The exact time of sunrise and sunset must be determined to use this method. They vary throughout the year according to the length of days. The Alternate Method dispenses with the exact timing and counts the hours begining at Midnight rather than sunrise. This can be an easier method for the modern world where life does not depend upon daily cycles of light and dark. It is up to the individual practitioner to determine for themselves which method to use. They should choose the one they feel is right, both will work.

Traditional Method


Begin with sunrise. To look up time of sunrise go to this chart. If your city is not there, go to this calculator to find it. The first hour after sunrise is associated with the day's ruler. The hours that follow cycle through the planets and begin again at the ruler in the 8th hour.
