After a number of years being shown as a Stallion; when he was l2 years old it was decided to geld him so that he could spend a more normal life, to live in a paddock with other horses and to be welcomed to more events than stallions were at that time. He came through this event with no complications and not long fter, was entered in the Australian Arabian Championships where he really excelled as a gelding It proved to be the best thing to happen to him as from then on he really proved himself to be a wonderful representative of the "Versatile Arabian". He even spent l2 months as a "Riding for the Disabled Mount" for a little girl who was confined to a wheel chair. He was so careful, almost asking ' is it alright to move?. Later when he was about l7 he was used to educate younthoroughbreds and to lead racehorses in their work through the bush, and as you can imagine, he had to be pretty fit. It was about this time that he won more Champion Geldingawards, due to the fact I think, he looked so well. About this time he also spent about 2 years as a polocrosse pony. Ilyad then started a new career as the 'Clerk of the Course's mount at Ascot Racecourse in Perth, for Paul Martin. where he went from being labelled a "Pretty Pony": to some of the the jockeys asking that he be the one to lead their problem racehorses to he barriers. He was also not afraid to use his body to push them into the barriers. There was a lot of interest shown by the public and the trainers in the fact that he was a Purebred Arabian. He was also one of the horses paraded at Ascot in his beautiful purple satin Arabian Show Costume complete with jewels, tassels and bells. In the past the label "mad arab" was a comment often heard from other breed people and they have been astonished at the way in which Ilyad conducted himself, especially when asked to lead a racehorse that was throwing itself around and practically doing cartwheels. Ilyad shouldered his way in and stuck like glue until the horse and jockey were delivered safely to the barriers. It was a joy to watch his big "Arab Trot" as this beautiful snowhite horse powered his way up the racecourse as though everyone was there to watch him. He loved to get all dressed up in his beautiful purple Arabian Show Costume, with its' tassells and bells. Scared the ....... out of other horses, but he grew another 2 inches when he was showing it off. He won many Arabian Show Costume classes in it. As we all know Ilyad is typical of his breed and he did a lot to promote the Arabian breed while he was in the public eye so much. His manners and solid acceptance of the need to stay calm in the midst of the excitement of a race meeting was a great example of our Arabians. Unfortunately his age caught up with him and as it was a very solid day's work, he strained his suspensory, so that was the end of that job. Since then Ilyad spent his retirement in the paddock and unfortunately in November, 2002, due to several severe problems he had, which spoiled his quality of life, sadly he had to be put down. The Purebred Arabian Horse could not have had a better ambassador, both as a Halter horse and a Saddle horse, and such a beautifull and gentle nature, than "Yamegi Ilyad", whether it be in the show ring or at home on the farm. He will be missed so much. |
