Review Questions: Chapter 7
1. The beginning of this chapter explores Andrew's rationale for joining the priesthood. Does his way of thinking seem sound to you? Do his motivations seem primarily affirmative (i.e., a way to do good), or penitent (i.e., a way to atone for past mistakes)? Do you think he made the right decision?
2. Compare Andrew's career motivation to that of Doctor Wheelan from chapter 3. How are their motivations similar? How are they different? Which character, if either, seems more justified in the occupational choice they have made?
3. Refer to the words that the bishop recites as he ordains Andrew into the priesthood. What irony might be found in this blessing?
4. Most of Chapter 7 is devoted to Andrew's sermon, the subject of which is the Biblical account of Moses and his brother Aaron. Why do you think Andrew would choose this story as the basis for a sermon? What parallels do you see between the men as described in the sermon and characters in the novel?
