Review Questions: Chapter 5

1.         Rachel appears to have undergone a fundamental transformation during her adolescent years.  Does her transformation seem normal to you?  That is, do most people experience a similar degree of transformation at some point in their lives?  What seems to have been the primary driver of this transformation?  Was it due to something that changed within her, or was it imposed upon her from without?  Do you like Rachel as a person more before she experienced this change, or afterward?  Why?

2.         Who appears to suffer the most as a result of Rachel's unresolved disagreements with her father?  What seems to be the root cause of their animosity toward each other?  Why can they not resolve their differences?

3.         What appears to be Rachel's motivation in joining Allison's protest group at college?  Do you think she acts primarily out of a sense of friendship with Allison, or does something else drive her actions?  Do you think that Rachel would have joined such a group if she had never met Allison?  Why or why not?

4.         How does the group decide which issue they will use as the focal point of their protest?  What is their rationale for choosing this issue?  Do you think that they would have been equally motivated in their protest if they had chosen a different issue?  What provides the greater justification for their protest: the issue they have chosen to highlight or the individual they have targeted?  Or, alternatively, do you feel that neither of these things justifies their actions?  Are you sympathetic to the group's ideas, or do you think that their actions are unwarranted or misdirected?
