||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Joel is my 6th cousin and close friend of 24 years. He's always been different. As soon as he could speak, he could have taught a prehistoric biology course on the dinosaurs. Our grandfathers' Boonscamp properties were separated by an old wire fence, so I snuck over to his house every Sunday for hours of tween-church playing and fist-fighting. My first official tour was of "Danger Path" in the late '80's -- a beaten trail starting in his papaw's corn garden and ending on up the hill a little ways at a little rocky drop-off. Now he's revered among his vast household of friends in Paintsville and Morehead as "the Tour Guide," with frequent journeys to Rowan County's own Lockegee Rock, and Olive Hill's abandoned limestone mine known as the "Mushroom Mines." Any trip East on I64 with Joel lands you at the Smokey Valley Truck Stop outside of Olive Hill where he will play a handful of country and classic rock songs, and sing every word. He sounds a little routine-oriented, but he has been known to take off to Mardi Gras, and even just to see Pittsburg on one night's notice. There's probably medication for him out there somewhere, but until he finds it, he's one of the most unique and just real people that I've ever met. It's an honor to know him. --Adam |

| Who I am: | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Joel Vanhoose, a Morehead State University alumnus with a Bachelors degree in History. I'm known as "the Tour Guide" because of the wacky adventures I often coordinate around Eastern Kentucky and beyond, as well as the way I try to help my friends and inadvertantly lead and protect them. I am sixth cousin to Adam and friends with everyone else on the group. I organized the trip to Frozen and introduced Jerm and J-Thorn to the others on the day of the trip. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| What I expected: | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Having encountered mysterious places such as Rowan County's Clack Mountain and the Mushroom Mines near Olive Hill, I foolishly wanted a 'new scary place' to explore. I'd heard a lot about it for years, and after successfully dealing with like situations, I decided to go visit and 'conquer' the place. I got much more than I bargained for. I expected to sense evil and get a little scared, but the physical manifestations in the pics and the video exceeded my expectaions. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| What I experienced: | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| I felt very uneasy the entire time I was at Frozen. Though I didn't see or hear anything out of the ordinary at the time, the pics and footage convinced me of what I already knew was there. Agreeing with Adam's familiar spirits theory, I know that what I felt was demonic activity manifesting in a way I'd never sensed before. The ruins of Frozen were pretty neat in their own right, especially the gym/auditorium room. However, it got so cold that night, I understand why they call the area "Frozen Creek!" |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| What I thought about it then: | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| I saw Frozen as just another scary place to be conquered. It was going to be one more wacky misadventure/roadtrip, only this one would bring together some of my Paintsville friends with some of my Morehead friends. I didn't take it seriously, although I did believe it would be a place of evil. I just wanted to see an old scary place with some history to it. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| What I think about it now: | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| I see now that Frozen is a place of extreme demonic activity. The reality of what we all encountered down there is pretty unsettling to be perfectly honest. I'm very thankful that I'm a Christian and protected by God in such situations. Frozen was scary, but it merely reaffirms my faith, shows me that there is much more to this world than we know, and reminds me that God protects His children. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| What I want you to know about it: | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Frozen is a place of demonic activity. It is not unique in this respect, and evil is not confined to such places. But any demonic force or being is still subject to God's commands, and as long as we trust in Him we are safe. I don't recommend visiting places such as Frozen thinking nothing can happen to you, but I know that God is merciful enough that when we are foolish and get ourselves into danger, He still protects us. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
