| Ness is the lead hero and central figure of "EarthBound." Darkness And Light Due to his role as silent protagonist in the game, Ness's personality is something of a mystery. In "EarthBound" fanfiction, there are two prominent characterizations often bestowed upon him. Some writers present Ness as a friendly, light-hearted, outgoing kid who will openly express himself when irritated -- sometimes in ways that can be viewed as humorous. Tales like EarthBound Retold, EarthBound: The Horsemen Saga, and The Rush are among those that have presented a rather quick-witted Ness who's pretty forward with his feelings. Other fanfics have a different take on the character, presenting a far more reserved, quieter person who's a bit on the shy side. Stories such as E. Revolution, Hero's Resolve, and This place I go rank among the fanfics in which Ness is certainly capable of opening up around friends, but is equally serious, cautious, or withdrawn -- and not necessarily due to whatever the present matter is. With A Little Love... Often, the latter Ness is used in romantic drama with Paula, who he once rescued from confinement. It can be said that when their stances on their relationship differ -- usually with Paula wanting to move things forward while Ness remains still -- the situation under which they first met is figuratively reversed. |

| As Exceptional As Expected... And Then Some
In "EarthBound" fanfiction, certain liberties are sometimes taken when it comes to Ness's special abilities. Among them are scenes in which he is given telepathy, or something that appears to be so. In these cases, however, it is usually only used for communication and doesn't approach the craftier levels that Paula and many Neo-characters occasionally have. Another ability bestowed upon Ness in fanfiction -- and perhaps a more natural one -- is the short-range teleport. Though not featured in the game, its existence only appears to be a logical conclusion. When Ness was still a newborn, he displayed a brief sign of telekinesis. This supposed ability remains one of those openings from "EarthBound" that fanfic writers have not shown much interest in. The alternate reality story E. Revolution is an exception. Notable Other Forms Fallen Hero While not exactly presenting him in a different form, the eight-part Destiny's Messenger does indeed feature one of the most notable looks at the character. Taking us through a gritty story of one man's battle against a small group of new invaders, the tale reveals a grieving, brooding Ness, 15 years after the Chosen Four's adventure, as he struggles through his ordeals. What A Doll In the distant-future story UnderBound, a protagonist known as Doll N -- the android-like creature who resembles Ness -- explores his world alongside a similar being who has Paula's appearance. It sounds both intriguing and strange at first, but it's what's beneath the surface that counts, and in Doll N's case, that amounts to an entertaining first-person narrative and some fascinating abilities. |
