Lauren
After a lot of focus on the protagonists,
EarthBound: The Perpetual Adventures used Episode 5 to introduce a character with the potential to become its first antagonistic regular.

When we meet her, Lauren Pierce is a notably brash girl who has a history with Ness -- something she uses, along with her attractive features, to regularly torment him.

Interlude, the fan-created work that takes place outside continuity, offers an alternate explanation of a more personal nature for Lauren's infatuation. Plans to write her out in the sixth installment of Perpetual were swayed when the writer had a change of heart after reading this tale. Lauren's character is further developed in Interlude 2, prior to which she was promoted to the status of supporting character in the ongoing, official story.

Past

(The following historical info applies to the Interlude series and is not, as of this writing, known to be canonical)

Lauren April Pierce was born in Summers and raised there for the majority of her youth -- until a radical change in her life created a reaction in Lauren that eventually resulted in her being sent to live alone in Onett. The feeling of rejection brought about by this marked a turning point in Lauren's character, creating a desire to make herself as alluring to others as possible.

Thus was born a highly assertive, sensuous persona, which she began to display in the halls of school, with special attention given to one target in particular.

Lauren and Ness

In
EarthBound: The Perpetual Adventures Episode 5, it was revealed that Lauren had long been chasing the one boy who had, to some extent, managed to resist her charms.

Lauren has known Ness longer than even Paula or his girlfriend Michelle have, and their relationship seems to sway among the points of unrequited flirtation, restrained attraction, deep resentment, questionable affection, and shaky truces.

After witnessing a brief fight between Ness and another boy, she learned of Ness's special abilities. The situation with the injured boy was eventually smoothed over, and all appeared to be well again. However, in
Interlude, Lauren soon used her knowledge to trick Ness into an elaborate set-up -- luring him into an unconscious state, taking photographs which depicted him in a misleading light, and threatening to have friends of hers spread the photos around on the Internet. With a relationship and his reputation on the line, Ness seemed forced to follow Lauren's bidding for weeks -- all as Jeff and Poo worked to learn more about the young woman while finding a way to help their friend. Eventually, Lauren's history and humanity were revealed, as the truth came out regarding just why she'd taken these actions.

Queen of Dalaam?

In
Interlude 2, Lauren would sit down with Paula to make a proposition: She'd create friction between Ness and Michelle, thus giving Paula a new chance at being with the boy of her dreams. The price: Paula would have to put Poo under a telepathic spell for about seven hours, giving Lauren complete control over him. As events played out, certain people, including an outraged Ness, claimed that Lauren's ego had reached the point of pure conceit.

Lauren herself began to question whether or not her surface persona was who she had truly become, and if there was anything left beneath. She found her answer while unexpectedly sympathizing with and relating to certain people in Dalaam, and once again, her compassion was put to the test. Lauren would soon serve Dalaam in an effort to bring about something highly beneficial to the kingdom. At that point, Lauren seemed to have made a genuine friend and admirer in Poo.
