Home
The Common Garter Snake is the most wide-ranging and commonly seen snake in the United States and Canada, where a dozen species of garter snakes are found. In northern areas, thousands of Common Garter Snakes may gather together to spend the winter in a communal den. During the day, this snake prowls for worms and amphibians. Garter snakes may bite when first handled, but they tame quickly.

Look For: A snake with 3 stripes down the back. Color and pattern can vary significantly. Stripes are often yellow with black between them. There may be red or black spots between the stripes. Some have no stripes at all.
