| Excersises Part 1: Morphemes Review As mentioned in Part 1 a morpheme is the smallest meaningful element in a word. Review Examples (English) (1): - unladylike - 3 morphemes 4 syllables - break up - un- 'not' - lady (sophisticated) adult female human - -like having the characteristics of - None of these morphemes can be broken up any more and retain any sense of meaning. Lady cannot be broken into "La" and "dy" eventhough "la" and "dy" are separate syllables. Note here that each syllable has no meaning on it's own. - Dogs - 2 morphemes 1 syllable - dog - -s plural marker on a noun - Technique - 1 morpheme 2 syllables - Even though the word has 2 syllables it is a single morpheme because it cannot be broken into smaller meaningful parts. Excersise 1 Keeping the lesson in mind, break up the following words into their morphemes. Excersise 2 Look at the root word given in Tsilagi and break out the morphemes. (don't worry about the final word meaning just yet). Footnotes: (1) Examples: Sil.org article "What is a Morpheme?" http://www.sil.org/linguistics/GlossaryOfLinguisticTerm/ WhatIsAMorpheme.htm |
