Thoughts on Episode 3 and Outlook for Episode 4

Thoughts on Episode Three -- Chile

Episode Three was an elimination leg. In Race 10, Mary was afraid mainly of the unknown due to her lack of travel experience, but now is willing to go without an alliance to help float Team Kentucky. Still, she missed the Cho brothers, a team strong enough to carry them, in the foreboding flashback. Teams departed the Pit Stop at Valley of the Dead, Chile. From there, teams had to book a flight to Puerto Montt, Chile. There was a flight landing at 12:55PM and a later one scheduled to land an hour later. Both flights connected in Santiago, Due to scarcity of tickets, only four teams made the first flight, Rob and Amber, Eric and Danielle, Joe and Bill, and Uchenna and Joyce. Rob and Amber wisely sought out a small travel agency in San Pedro to book their tickets. Uchenna and Joyce booked their tickets and those for Joe and Bill at a local hotel, while Eric's sharp hearing got his team the last available tickets on the first plane. Fortunately for those on the second flight, it landed early, resulting in only about a 45 minute gap.

From Puerto Montt, teams had to drive 30 miles inland to a fish breeding facility near the town of Metri.

Roadblock

Who can handle a slippery situation? One team member had to transfer 80 fish from an 1800 gallon breeding tank to a common holding tank. Once done, the team member had to read the clue written on the bottom of the tank.

It was crucial to those doing the Roadblock to read the complete clue.

Detour

Vertical Limit: Each team member has to complete a 40 foot vertical rock climb to retrieve one half of the next clue. No team even attempted this physically challenging Detour.

River Wild: Teams had to complete a 2.5 mile rafting course through Category 3 and 4 rapids. All Teams survived the rafting adventure on the River Wild

How they arrived at the Detour site of La Maquina was all the difference for some teams. David and Mary might have held sixth, except that they missed a left turn toward Petrohue, then far overshot it, causing them to be dead last to begin the rafting. Joe and Bill were about as lost when they stumbled on Charla and Mirna. One of the short-statured team spilled the beans, allowing Joe and Bill to find La Maquina. Eric and Danielle were in first reach the cluebox, but lost their way to the rafting venue, allowing Rob and Amber and Uchenna and Joyce to pass them.

Dustin and Kandice had to go back and retreive the Detour clue they had missed when they spotted a Race flag near the rafting venue instead of the sign for La Maquina as specified in the clue. The queens were in luck as they managed to retrieve the clue and still be checked in fourth place.

Outlook for Episode Four

Part of the chat in Episode 1 was the thought that all the teams have been around the world once. Moreover, they have had the chance to learn their lessons from the first time around. Clearly one theme for this Race is which teams did not learn from their past mistakes. So far, the three teams eliminated failed to learn from their past mistakes and failed strategies. Some teams appear to have done little if anything special to prepare for the competition, and it was briefly amusing to see how much weight Kevin and Drew had gained. John Vito and Jill reprised their capacity for getting lost. The beauty queens, Dustin and Kandice, are still having trouble with detail aspects of the race in handling and reading of clues. In the preview, Danielle is confused as to which country they are going to, no surprise. Rob, however, seems to have focused on new tricks for competing against the other teams.

If Rob and Amber can avoid mental errors, and deal with any adversity that comes along, they could be virtually unstoppable. Rob is making outstanding decisions, and Amber is intelligent, savvy, and good at tasks and navigation in her own right. Danny and Oswald have chosen to communicate effectively, leveraging their experience. Eric and Danielle, Uchenna and Joyce, and Dustin and Kandice are doing quite well.

The two bottom teams of Charla and Mirna are in trouble, along with Joe and Bill. Teri and Ian are another team that has struggled. The preview shows a close, exciting finish, and Charla falling, doing a faceplant in spite of Mirna's urgings to hurry.

What will Episode 4 reveal about the racers as the action moves to Argentina and who will be eliminated in the dash for the mat? Watch the exciting fourth episode of Amazing Race All Stars Sunday, March 11th at 8 PM Eastern/Pacific.
